Gage told himself Darbyâs leaving was for the best. Heâd miss her like crazy but took heart that sheâd be safer in Asbury with Leo and Edith than staying here with him.
He wished he could find a way to help her believe in God. Based on her statements, he sensed she was close. The Preacher sheâd lived with had done a number on her faith. And he could easily understand why it would be difficult for her to move beyond that experience.
Darby stood and cleaned up their wrappers. âGive me a minute to pack.â
âSure.â He ignored the knot in his gut. âTake your time.â
Using the map app on his phone, he estimated the distance to Asbury. Not too far, so taking a rideshare would work.
His phone rang as he was staring at it. Recognizing Detective Prideâs number, he quickly answered. âHello, Detective.â
âKillion. I have good news for you.â
Gage gestured for Darby to come over. âIâd like to put you on speaker.â
Darby joined him. He placed the call on speaker and held the phone between them. âWe could use some good news, Detective.â
âWe have Niles Archer in custody. And we have impounded his black Honda CRV, the license plate was covered with mud as you mentioned. Thereâs also some damage to the front of the vehicle that indicates heâs the one who crashed you into the ditch.â
Darby sank into the chair, her gaze glued to his.
âWeâre very glad to hear that, Detective. Has he given you any information on the other incidents? Specifically the zip line cable?â
âNo. Unfortunately, heâs not talking other than to ask for his lawyer. And we didnât find a weapon in the SUV either.â
Gageâs hopes deflated like a balloon. âSo Reyes is still armed and on the loose.â
âA BOLO has been issued, and Iâm confident weâll find him.â
He truly hoped the detective was right about that. Glancing at Darby, he lifted a brow, silently asking if she had anything to add. She shook her head.
âThanks again for the update, Detective,â he said. âPlease continue to keep us informed, especially once you find Reyes.â
âWill do. Take care.â Detective Pride disconnected from the call.
âThey caught him,â Darby repeated as if dazed. âI honestly didnât think they would.â
He dropped down beside her. âEven better, it looks like theyâll nail him for hitting us last night. That should be enough to send him back to jail.â
âYou think so?â Darbyâs gray eyes clung to his. âWhat if he claims it was an accident?â
âStill a hit-and-run, besides, heâll find it hard to explain why the license plate is full of mud when the rest of the vehicle isnât.â
âYeah.â A small smile tugged at her mouth. âI hadnât thought of that.â
âWell, the good news is that you can head to Asbury without worrying about things here. Iâm sure itâs only a matter of time until they find Reyes.â He spoke confidently, even though he knew Tyrone Reyes was likely more adept at eluding the cops.
At least, he had been eight years ago when Gage had started working for him.
