By the following morning, Cristo’s arm was looking and feeling considerably better. Sara, too, found herself much improved, following a full night’s sleep and the breakfast tacos Mac had brought back for each of them for breakfast after his early grocery store run.

So it was that when Mac received a call from a contractor he’d hired to remove the remaining debris from the river resort, she raised her coffee cup and said cheerfully, “Go ahead and do your thing, please. We’re good here now—and I know you need to get everything cleaned up so you’re one step closer to getting the place back up and running.”

“You’re sure you can get along without me?” Mac asked as he stood from the table where the two of them had lingered talking long after the children had finished eating and asked to go kick around the soccer ball outside with Roxy. “I don’t want you straining yourself if you’re still hurting.”

“Really, I’ll be fine,” she assured him. “My arm’s feeling a lot better, and Silvia and Cristo have both promised they’ll be extra attentive to their lessons and help out around here, too, even with the sweeping and the dishes.”

She smiled, realizing that, whether or not the twins would admit it, they had been influenced by their father’s good example. Initially, she’d noticed them watching with surprise, if not suspicion, when he’d taken on tasks their traditionally minded grandfather never would have deigned perform, taking care of their meals and clean up without comment or complaint. Soon, however, they’d begun pitching in, clearly wanting his approval—at least on an unconscious level.

Mac nodded. “Glad to hear it, but I’ll check to see they’re following through as promised.”

“I’ll let them know,” she said, standing from the table, “but I can’t imagine it’s going to be a problem. Thanks for staying over again last night—I hope the sofa hasn’t been too uncomfortable to sleep on.”

A teasing smile lit up his face. “You should know it’s not, considering all the hours you put on it napping yesterday afternoon yourself.”

She snorted. “I was pretty out of it from those meds they gave me, wasn’t I? Too tired to move a muscle...”

She went still as it came back to her how safe she’d felt, lying there as he’d carefully placed the blanket over her and how he’d—

“What is it?” he asked. “You have the oddest look on your face.”

“Yesterday, when you covered me up on the sofa...” She felt the warmth of his lips skimming the warm flesh of her temple, a memory that sent up a flutter beneath her stomach even now. Or had she imagined—or even daydreamed—it?

“When I covered you up, what?” he asked, blue-gray eyes searching hers.

That was when she knew. She hadn’t imagined it at all. “You kissed me, didn’t you?” The question came out half a whisper.

“I’m not sure I could even call that a proper kiss,” he said, looking both troubled and guilty nonetheless. “But it still didn’t give me any right.
