Being a campaign manager in a rural part of Alberta isn’t as glamorous as it would be elsewhere. Alfie’s headquarters are a motel room in Rendal. The campaign budget is Acacia’s own money, and all they’ve used it for so far is to print off flyers from the photocopier in the newsagents before putting them up all around Lotus and handing them out to the courteous, yet disinterested, locals.

After a few days of observing what’s happening in Lotus and getting information from anyone actually willing to talk to them, Alfie and Acacia are sitting at a bench on the outskirts of Lotus, upon a steep hill overlooking the spectacular river gorge. A spectacular setting for an unremarkable debrief.

“I don’t think I’ve gotten through to anyone so far, Alfie. They’re all so chrysalised, so brainwashed. Do you have a plan B?”

“I have an idea. Whether it’s good or not I’ll let you decide, but I think you should work on convincing the local priest of the supposed invasion?”

“Father Bekume?”

“Yes, he’s undoubtedly of African origin, and what we’re warning about sounds like modern colonisation. A bunch of white people coming to take what doesn’t belong to them. Plus, nothing mobilises people better than faith. Father Bekume mentioning the invasion in a sermon, is going to mean more than it coming solely from you on the street.”

“That’s a great idea, Alfie. I feel like I’m wasting my time with the flyers. Time to move up the gears.”

“I’d suggest that you still keep going with the flyers. Bombardment is the name of the game. We need to hit these people all day, every day, in various different ways in order to stand a chance of it sinking in.”

“Redentor might just reset everything as they sleep though, back to how it was. It doesn’t matter if we hand out one flyer or a hundred.”

“If we want to be sure of our hypothesis, we need to know we’ve done everything we could. I need to be sure that the Chrysalis is capable of rigging elections before I decide if, and how, I relay that news to the world. People aren’t going to believe it if we don’t give winning this thing our best shot – which brings me to some exciting news, Acacia.”

“What’s that?”

“I think I’ve found a glitch in the restrictive Internet here; a way of being able to publish on the server without Redentor’s filters blocking it.”

“So we can disseminate fake news about the invaders?”

“Exactly, I’ve sent you some articles that look very real, created a backstory about these people, who they are and what they want. It’s purposefully light on detail and heavy on the fear factor.”

“I’ll have a look at them, but I doubt I’m going to find much fault with them. It’s not like I know anyone else who could write a news article better than an actual journalist.” Acacia laughs.

“Can any of your YouTuber friends perhaps pretend to be, say, the ringleader of the invaders? Ideally a white male, because it will lend even more credibility to the bogus news stories.
