Chapter Nine

Mabel gasped when she watched her son walk out of police custody towards her. His face was swollen on one side with a huge bruise, a nasty black shade.

“What happened to your face? That bruise wasn’t there when I came in yesterday,” she asked, taking a hand to his face to access the damage. He winced loudly and she couldn’t help the small cry that came out from her.

“It’s alright Ma,” Wade assured her he was fine. They walked out with Jerry, his lawyer for his case. His mother reached out to Jerry from church after the police refused to release him based on the ‘severity of the assault’. His appearance in court looked a bit worried too. Luckily, Jerry knew someone in the police department who promised to help ensure Wade’s case was taken before a judge as soon as possible. Days went by and it ended up being a week in jail for Wade. He told his mom to keep the kids away because he didn’t want them to see him in jail. It had been hard getting the kids from Gabrielle and Regina during that time. It wasn’t until Mike started wetting the bed again, a habit he dropped a long time ago, that she drove them to his mother’s place one afternoon and left them on the porch. Wade was just happy to know that his kids were back with his mother.

On the morning Wade was supposed to appear in court, the judge spent fifteen minutes talking about the danger of assault and its affect on the black community by using Wade as a prime example. Even after his racist-leaning and intensely biased tirade, there was no evidence at all that Gabrielle was ever assaulted by Wade. She had no one to corroborate her claims of past assault. No timeline or place that could be established by the police as to when the last beating took place. However, there were numerous testimonies from neighbors and friends of Wade’s upstanding character and fatherhood.

Gabrielle was shifting in her seat, obviously upset with the positive remarks about Wade. You could tell her confidence began to decrease as her once saddened look, quickly turned into intense anger. “That’s bullshit!” she yelled abruptly. “Excuse me young lady! One more outburst like that and I’ll hold you in contempt of court!” the judge stated. “But they are lying!” screamed Gabrielle. “Did you hear me?” the judge warned Gabrielle.

Flushing red, the judge quickly ruled that Wade be released from police custody. But as he left, he couldn’t help aiming one last dig at Wade, as his family and friends hugged him on his victory.

“Young man, no evidence does not in any way mean you did not commit the crimes for which you stand accused. Hopefully the long arm of the law is firm in grabbing you next time, it always does when it comes to people like you,” the judge said.

As a loud murmur went up in the crowd, Wade felt his eyes filmed over as the racist remark of the judge scraped at his nerve endings.
