Late the following Sunday afternoon, a little more than a week after the breakout, two MA state police troopers visited Hennessey. They had on their formal dress. Light blue top and dark blue bottom, knee-high boots, stiff, round-brimmed hat with pronounced, curved visor. The uniforms made troopers look like high-ranking World War II army officers. Their waist belts defined authority: revolvers, mace, taser, handcuffs, and more. As they approached the house, Hennessey thought about their attire. He’d never worn anything like it as a police detective.

Probably modeled after the Germans. Not sure whether it looks commanding, intimidating, or ridiculous. All three, I guess.

Hennessey had nothing to share with them. “Sure, I visited with my brother regularly. Dutifully. What of it?” he asked gruffly. “If you think I had anything to do with the breakout, you’re wrong. I had no idea it was in the offing, no idea at all. Good luck with it though.”

There wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell he’d help the MA state police recapture Joey. Or capture anyone for that matter. Not then. Not ever. Hennessey of course had his own issues in the past as a member of the Boston Police Department. And he readily conceded some of them were big. But the MA state police?

The latest MA state police scandal involved troopers caught padding their overtime pay and taking featherbedded and ghost assignments. It was also the state police who insisted that only police could safely handle roadway construction details, although other states saved tons of money handling them with trained civilians or municipal workers. The Boston Globe reported extensively on these issues. Nothing ever came of it. Hennessey thought about the MA state police with contempt.

At least I never milked the public teat the way some of these state troopers do. Year after year they do it. Great for us Massachusetts taxpayers, right guys? What a big, lousy blend of legal and illegal corruption. It’s sordid. Know why these guys don’t care? Money. The Big Green. They’re only in it for the Big Green, after all.

The two troopers at Hennessey’s house knew about his past detective work for the Boston Police Department, and his current work for the BCPD. It meant nothing to them. His brother, Joey Hennessey, had escaped from one of the State’s maximum security prisons, and was a convicted felon in prison on a life-without-parole sentence. Everyone knew that at some point Joey would contact family.

“You know why we’re here, Mr. Hennessey,” the older and slightly more senior trooper said. Neither of them came close to Hennessey in age or experience. Hennessey looked down at them from the front porch, standing a foot, foot and a half above them. “Yeah, I know why you’re here.”

“We’d like to come in and take a quick look around if that’s ok with you?” said the younger trooper.

“Absolutely not.”

The MA state police were not used to having folks say no to them. Initially caught off guard, the troopers recovered quickly.

“Why not? Mr. Hennessey, it makes it seem as if you’re hiding something.
