Chapter 30

Byrn awoke early in the afternoon.

The assassin felt the same edginess he always experienced as a kill approached. It was tinged with slight apprehension. He knew he’d spend the next hour revisiting all his planning, just to be sure he’d covered every possibility.

After that came the expectancy.

This job was different from most. There would be a delay between his current actions and the kill itself. That said, after today there was no going back.

Lachlan Byrn never went back.

Byrn’s first task was to go through the house. Every surface he may have inadvertently left a fingerprint, or an element of DNA on had to be cleaned. After ninety minutes had passed, he was satisfied his presence in the dwelling had been extinguished.

He then loaded his remaining belongings into his backpack and climbed onto the Kawasaki. He’d enjoyed the bike. It would be a shame to destroy it. Byrn jumped on, revved the engine, and then headed south.

Lehtmetsa was a small village in Järva County. The assassin turned off Perila-Janeda and passed through the tiny settlement before venturing down a series of side roads. Eventually, he found the old farmhouse he’d located in his earlier research. Next to the house was a large wooden barn. The building contained most of the farm implements used on the land. Amongst them, Byrn had noted two KTM trail bikes parked near the entrance. They currently stood leaning on their stands in front of the other farm equipment. To Byrn, they appeared dusty and accessible, like working bikes. Just what he had in mind.

After checking that the KTMs were still there, Byrn proceeded down the dirt road and into the forest about a mile and a half away. He rode another mile into the woods before the track ran out. He then ventured down an over-grown walking trail. Three hundred yards down the trail, Byrn came to a small clearing. He looked around. Tall pine and spruce trees surrounded the space formed a large green wall protecting the tiny dell from the outside world.

Perfect.

Byrn climbed off the Kawasaki and laid it on the ground. Placing his backpack a safe distance away, he used his hands and feet to rake up sounding leaves before scattering them all over the motorcycle. When he was done, he plonked down on the dirt and waited.

Nearly an hour later, the assassin was satisfied that the darkness had fully enveloped the forest. He leaned over, reached into his backpack, and retrieved a container of petrol. He got up, walked over to the bike, and doused the petrol liberally over the machine and the leaves. He then pulled a lighter out of his pocket, bent down, picked up a leaf, lit it, and flicked it onto the small pyre.

The flames soared up into the night but didn’t reach above the surrounding trees. The area of cleared space around the fire would keep it from spreading into the surrounding forest. Byrn waited a few moments until the flames had peaked before grabbing his backpack and retracing his route.
