Chapter Seventeen

When Lucy awoke, it was to discover that she was as warm as could be and that her legs were entwined with Will’s. Sometime in the night, she’d snuggled up against him and now her head rested on his wide chest. Her mouth curved with a smile. She decided it was the most comfortable pillow in the world.

A sliver of pale morning light penetrated a chink in the curtains above Will’s bed; it illuminated a narrow section of his handsome face—his tousled dark-brown hair, a high cheekbone, a slice of stubbled jaw, and a corner of his beautifully sculpted mouth. When his face was in repose, the stern expression he often wore disappeared. In fact, apart from his night beard, Will almost looked angelically boyish.

Although, last night put paid to the idea that he was either of those things. Lucy bit her lip as she recalled everything they’d done together in this bed. All the wicked things they’d said. Will was more like a fallen angel, and she’d quite happily followed him into sin.

But then, she was the one who’d come knocking on his door and had entreated him to share his bed with her. He really wasn’t to blame.

A cock crowed in the distance and Lucy’s toes curled. Cock. What a wonderful word for such a wonderful part of a man. If she had her way, she’d lie in this bed with Will for the rest of the day, learning all the ways he liked to be pleasured and what else he could do with his marvelous cock to please her.

And then she sighed. She couldn’t afford to be a slugabed. Very soon she’d have to get up and steal back into the house and her own bedroom before anyone noticed her absence.

She yawned and stretched a little, and Will stirred.

“Lucy…” His voice, all low and husky with sleep, was music to her ears. “Good morning, lass.”

She sat up a little and smiled down at him. “Good morning to you too. How did you sleep?”

“Like a log.” Then he frowned. “What time is it?”

“I’m not sure, but judging by the light, I suspect it’s still quite early. Before six o’clock?”

“Hmmm.” Will pinched the bridge of his nose, then pushed himself farther up the pillows so that his face was now in the shadows.

There was something about the way he was looking at her—a solemn light in his gaze—that made Lucy feel uneasy. A frisson of apprehension slid down her spine. She swallowed. “Is anything wrong?”

His answering smile wasn’t reflected in his eyes. Reaching out, he gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Yes…and also no,” he said gravely. “We need to talk.”

Lucy attempted to make her voice light. “Well, that sounds ominous.”

When Will didn’t reassure her that what he was about to say wasn’t actually “ominous,” Lucy’s belly began to churn in earnest. “What is it?” She tried to smile. “You’re not going to tell me that there’s a Mrs. Armstrong somewhere, are you?”

Will shook his head.
