Chapter 8

Summer

After Rachel left The Pad, I had set up my study area right on the kitchen table and was about to settle in for a long night of studying, when the door opened, and Nat walked in. As part of his birthday surprise present given during the birthday dinner, Nat, and the twins each got their own set of keys to Aunt Sookie’s Pad as a symbol of them always being welcomed and at home.

“Nat,” I said, surprised.

“Summer,” Nat said walking quickly to me. “Is Aunt Sookie here?”

“No, she has a late night class for the adults,” I said.

“Good, because I don’t want her to know about what’s going on with HFA,” he said. “She worked her butt off to pull strings for you to attend HFA so all this that has happened and is happening, it’s pretty insane. I’m the President of the student body at HFA, and I couldn’t even stop it. It’s a mob mentality, and unfortunately the student body feels justified to kick the new student out by any means just because they felt you didn’t get into HFA fairly. We, the 3 Knights, were appointed by the student body to enforce the votes and the rules. Unfortunately that’s tradition. So, Summer,” he took my hand and held it gently, “This is what’s happening. There’s a conflict between me and the other two Knights…River and Lincoln. They wanted me to stay out of your case, but I stayed on the Knights so I can protect you from within. I don’t want anything to happen to you that will hurt you. At the same time, I believe you do have the strength to fight back, especially against these guys, and even against me if you should. Since I stayed on for your case, I’m expected to try to get you to drop out of here. Don’t take it personally, but that was what I was elected for, especially since I am the President. Be prepared to fight me. If I do anything that you are uncomfortable with, let me know. Fight me back, fight against anyone. Just don’t be a victim.”

He pulled me to him and held me tightly. “Summer, I’m so sorry you got involved in this. None of this is your fault. None of it is personal.”

“Nat,” I finally said, after relishing being held so tightly in his arms. “I don’t understand what’s going on. Can you tell me what is going to happen? Can you let me know what they are planning so I am prepared?”

Nat held my hand still and led me to sit down next to him on the sofa. “After this week, be prepared for an attack from either Lincoln or River or even me. We are supposed to try to scare you to drop out. If you stand your ground and if you can fight back, to show you deserve to be at this school, then you earn yourself another week of peace.”
