Wayne slipped past a set of friends admiring a rack of scarves on the left and blinked at a display of mannequin legs featuring hosiery on his right. He never had much use for Portobello Road. Too many people. Most of the wares were second- or even third-hand, and the new stuff was cheap crap he’d never own. He’d come too far to bargain shop.

Playing spy and having his taxi follow their taxi seemed so over-the-top, he wondered if he had landed in an alternate universe. He never thought he’d utter the words, “follow that taxi.”

Narrowing in on the bitch, he spied the same man who knocked out Daniel last night. Not that the feat was much to crow about. A strong wind could take the kid down, but Wayne knew better than to underestimate the two in the future.

Chaos reigned around Wayne, and everyone seemed intent on getting in his way or being as boisterous as possible. He wanted to hear the trio’s conversation and strained to catch the words.

“. . . Mother Earth . . .” a man Wayne had never seen before said over his shoulder to the couple.

He missed the rest when a child began wailing.

“. . . Oxford?” the bitch asked.

Wayne stiffened. How . . .? Who the hell was this woman? Or the man, for that matter? Now that he had time to recover from the debacle, he swore he heard her use the words “since last op” during his botched attempt to capture her. What the hell did that make her? What type of ‘op’ could she be talking about? And how did they know about Mother Earth? Had they found the connection with Oxford yet? Shit. His mind spiraled. It was too soon for that to happen. He still had one final target for the Sheikh before he could get paid and retire . . . though, after last night’s disaster, he doubted he received the extra bonus he counted on. Fuck.

He needed to get his hands on her and find out exactly who she was, what she knew, and who she told. That meant he had to capitalize on the disorganized crowds and succeed in snatching her this time.

Pressing forward, he pushed to instill himself right behind her. Pulse pounding and his hands shaking, he closed the distance. I’ve got you, bitch, he crowed, closing the gap to only a few feet.

Something slammed into his shoulder, and he yelped, jumping to the side to avoid the end of a rolled carpet bashing his head.

A young couple laughed and yelled for everyone to “make way” as they plowed through the throng with their prize.

Straightening his button-down shirt, he scanned the area. His heart plunged. “Fuck.” He pivoted, frantically searching. Where the hell had the bitch and the man gone?

He jogged forward only to stop after a few steps thanks to a family pushing prams. He tried to squeeze around them, but the stream of traffic going in the other direction was too strong and thick.
