THIRTY-EIGHT

“So what do you do, David?” Candy asked.

“I’m in corporate insurance,” Tarik said, remembering the notes he had been given for his cover.

“Corporate?” Candy asked, looking confused.

“It means I sell insurance to businesses.”

“Oh, like fire insurance.”

He shrugged. “I would say more like asset or liability insurance. This would include any properties the corporation might have. I also sell group insurance, where a corporation can set up a benefits plan for its employees.”

“Is there good money in what you do?” Candy asked.

“Why do you ask?”

“I mean, you look like a man who has fine taste in things.” She eyed his watch.

He laughed. “I have several of these. I like watches, and also cars.”

“What do you have?”

“I’ve got a Mercedes and a BMW.” Tarik did, in fact, own the latest Mercedes model, and his wife had a brand new BMW. “And I also own an Audi and a Tesla,” Tarik fibbed. He hoped to own one of those types of cars one day, though.

“Your wife is so lucky,” Candy said.

“I’m sure your husband buys you nice things too.”

“He used to until he started seeing the other woman.”

“How do you know he’s cheating on you?”

“A woman always knows when her husband isn’t faithful to her.”

Tarik looked at his almost-empty glass. “So, why don’t you leave him?”

“I would, but I have a prenup that clearly states that in order for me to get a portion of his assets, we need to be married for at least five years.”

“How long have you been married now?”

She smiled. “Just over four.”

“So you’re almost there,” he said. “What if he divorces you before the five years are up?”

“You see, the prenup was his idea,” Candy said. “He was afraid I’d leave him after a year, so he put in the five-year clause. But I put in that if he divorced me, I’d get double what I would’ve gotten after five years.”

“Wow, that’s smart,” Tarik said. He suddenly had a feeling Candy was not the one they were looking for. He hoped Walters thought the same thing. She had heard the entire conversation through the microphone hidden under his tie.

Tarik coughed. That was his signal for further instruction.

Walters said into his earpiece, “Stick to the plan. We can’t be sure if she’s telling the truth or not.”

Tarik exhaled and moved his hand over his hair.

“Long day?” Candy asked.

“More like a long week,” he replied.

“You look like you deserve a break,” she said, placing a finger on his jacket.

“I do, don’t I?”

“Yes, you do. And you know what?”

She leaned over so he could smell her perfume.

“What?” he asked.

“I know just the place where we can go and relax.”

He frowned and moved away from her. He was instructed to play hard to get. If he jumped in too quickly, it might spook her. They wanted her to cajole and seduce him into doing what she wanted.

It was exactly what she did. “I promise I won’t tell anyone.”

“I don’t know.” He looked at his watch. “I should get home.”

“Can I tell you another secret?”

“Sure.
