Chapter 17

Saint

Arriving home early from the streets, I waited for Mira. A long, painful wait. She didn’t return until after dusk, sheepish guilt lining her delicate features. I opened the door, breathing in her sweet scent, but its top note was laced with poison.

Gently, I bent, kissing the side of her cheek and taking her coat.

“Cold out?”

“Yes, chilly.” Her eyes wouldn’t connect with mine. She was afraid to look at me, and all that did was convince me that what she was hiding in her vault was way worse than what it looked like. The flood of thoughts running through my brain stopped my mouth from opening. There was too much going on inside me. I gathered myself and spoke.

“Come inside where it’s warm. The chef prepared a meal earlier, and I thought we could eat and talk together.”

Mira placed a palm over the back of her neck, rubbing at it.

“Yes, that would be good. Smells delicious.” We were dancing, but once she sat at the table, all bets were off. I would pull every thread of truth out of her, no matter where the night took us.

Mira losing weight on her already petite frame made her look fragile, but she was far from a frail woman. Otherwise, my soul wouldn’t sing for her like it did every second of the day.

She slid onto her seat, a glass of wine already poured for her, and I sat in mine, acidic rage tucked under my hood. “Have a nice day?” I ventured, stabbing at my broccoli.

She sipped her wine. Now she looked at me, a savage fire in hers. “You had me followed, Saint.”

I’d elected not to drink. I wanted a rational mind when speaking with Mira. “I did, and with good reason.” Mira pushed her locks behind her ears, prodding at her mashed potatoes before looking at me. There was a sledgehammer she was about to drop, and the room spun around in orbit. Pinching my temples, I stared down at my food, not hungry anymore.

“Speak, Mira. Tell me the truth, and don’t leave me out in the cold. I’ve been following you. I saw you with a lady at the airport a few weeks back.”

Mira’s eyes jerked open wide, her mouth agape. “Saint. I did it for his protection. Please understand.” She was already begging, and I didn’t know what for.

“Understand what, Mira? Stop with the cryptic fucking games because I’m not letting you leave this table until you tell me everything. That’s all I want.”

If the woman was attempting to break me, her efforts cracked me into pieces, and if she wasn’t careful, I wasn’t sure if I could keep the insidious monster running the streets of Chi-town suppressed.

“Yes, you deserve the truth.” Her French-tipped nails gripped the wineglass, her neck muscles flexing with tightness.

“Saint, the boy you saw at the airport is your son. Alessandro.”

A small sentence, but one that carried the weight of the world on its shoulders. My ears deceived me because she’d just revealed the unthinkable.
