Katherine turned away from watching Sean and the bunny to face her Crone sisters. “Someone left us a present on the edge of your property. Instead of setting off the wards to announce their presence, they used a bunny to lure Phineas into finding it. Sean just turned the bunny loose. It wasn’t magical.”

Violet walked to the table and inspected the urn. She put her hand above it and made a face.

Ignoring the table, Listeria walked to Katherine and plucked something from her hair. She grinned as she twirled the leafy twig in her fingers. “You’re a mess, Katherine. Who were rolling around with on the forest floor?”

Sean got back just in time to hear Listeria’s teasing. He grinned at her. “I was showing Katherine my magic. Why do you always have to give her a hard time?”

“Yes, well, I bet I’m not the only one who enjoys doing that,” Listeria said with a snort.

It wasn’t a lie. Sean showed her his magic—and more than once.

Katherine cleared her throat before glaring at Listeria. “Stop joking and pay attention here. Raymond Kolasky is in that urn. He’s a male witch. His coven put his soul in the urn when Mather evicted him from his body. They somehow heard about the Alchemist and now want me to put Raymond back into his original form. Is someone blogging about us or something? Where are people hearing about everything we do?”

Violet snorted loudly. “Alastair—probably. Warlocks talk to everyone about everything. That’s why the Baba Yaga enjoys using them in her work. You can bet your ass some of them are friends with the witches of that dark magic coven.”

Katherine held out the note to Violet who took it and read it.

“Huh... where’s the Ifrit they sent?” Violet asked.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. It wasn’t in the rabbit.”

“Are you sure?” Violet asked.

“Yes. We’re sure,” Sean said firmly. “I didn’t feel the magic of a thousand desert winds when I held the bunny. All I felt was a stark terror that the barking dog was going to eat him. His heart was still thundering when I set him free.”

Listeria chuckled. “That bunny should be more worried that Jabari will come along and make him a snack.”

Katherine sighed in frustration. “That information helps no one, Listeria.”

Violet looked down at Phineas. “Are you the Ifrit, Phineas? Are you?” she asked with a humor-the-doggie voice.

The dog sneezed in reply and then looked pathetically at Katherine. Katherine chuckled. “I don’t think he’s magical, but Phineas is still a good dog. He earns his doggie kibble just being cute.”

The four of them chuckled at Phineas’s confused expression, that swung to each of their laughing faces before he turned his back to them all.

Violet shook her head. “We’ve had a lot of cremation urns in our life lately.”

“And too many with disembodied spirits in them,” Listeria added.

Katherine, who still deeply regretted Mather escaping from the Alchemist’s urn, frowned at their joking instead of joining in. Sometimes she felt like the only person who took stopping him seriously.
