Chapter Fifteen
âThat Angelia has taken a real shine to you, Mike,â Sergeant McGraw said with a grin. âIf I were you, I wouldnât let her get away. Sheâs a keeper.â
âThat is exactly why I donât want to put her in danger again. She and her family already risked their lives for me. I donât want them to do it again,â he said. âOkay, letâs hear your plan and get on with it.â
The sergeant laid it out to him. When she had finished, she said, âSo the first thing we need to do is let Detective Mercerâs snitch know youâre here to get your truck. Heâll let out that youâre going to go see the place where your brother was killed. The snitch will see that word gets back to Johnny Garzillo, and we believe heâll do it fairly soon. Then weâll get you in position and wait. This really should work.â
Mike was more than a little nervous. Not all good plans go as hoped for. He prayed that this one would be successful. He wanted Garzillo in custody. The hours passed slowly as Mike waited. His truck was in the parking lot now. The key fob was back in his pocket. All he had to do was go out, get in the truck, and drive. No one would try to stop him, he hoped. If there was one thing Mike was not, it was a coward. Heâd proven that to himself many times as a member of the Coast Guard. What he struggled with the most was waiting. Heâd had more than his fill of that in the hospital as he waited to get well enough to be released. It had seemed like forever.
His phone rang. He flinched at the sound. Finally, he thought, it was time to go do his part to end the horror of Eliâs death. But it was not Sergeant McGraw calling.
âHello, Hank,â he said when he saw on his phoneâs screen who was calling.
âIâve been on the phone with both the FBI and the detectives in Salem, Oregon. They have confirmed that the brothers of Kyleâs first wife are now living in Chicago. It was suspected before, but now we know it to be the case. I also spoke at length with the sheriff. They all know I plan to go to Chicago and see if I can help search for Martie, and at the same time possibly catch the killer of the two men who were murdered in my county,â Hank said.
âI plan to go that way too,â Mike told him. âI think thatâs the most likely place the killer would have taken Martie, if she is still alive. Weâve got to try. But first Iâm trying to help catch the third man who was part of the threesome that murdered my little brother.â At Hankâs urging, he told him how they were attempting to lure Johnny Garzillo out of hiding and arrest him.
âThat makes me nervous, Mike. Youâre not healed yet. Be really careful.
