On the Hunt

Nancy sat back in her chair in surprise. How could Romero guarantee that the Elizabethan festival would “die”? She wondered if he was simply speaking out of anger or if he could back up his words with actions. Was he the one writing the notes and vandalizing the festival?

Nancy didn’t have time to continue her speculations. Romero seemed to be growing suspicious of her questioning. “I’m a very busy man, Miss Drew,” he said, looking at his watch. “And I’m now behind schedule. You should be able to find your way out.” Abruptly he grabbed some papers from his desk and swung his swivel chair away from Nancy.

Closing the notebook she had on her lap, Nancy politely thanked Romero and left the office.

Driving home, Nancy found herself thinking about Romero. Although he had tried to look cool and confident, his smooth surface had disappeared when Nancy began asking about the Elizabethan festival. He was obviously worried about it.

She remembered the conversation she had overheard between Romero and Schotter. Romero had wanted Schotter to work with him on the medieval fair, but Schotter had firmly turned him down. After hearing Romero’s flashy plans, Nancy wasn’t surprised that Schotter had not been interested.

She wondered if Romero’s strong determination could drive him to vandalizing the festival. It was only through luck that no one had been seriously hurt. Had anyone been hurt, the troupe might decide never to return to River Heights.

Nancy decided to spend the rest of the afternoon at home. Hannah, who was still a bit shaken from the previous night’s attempted break-in, would appreciate the company. And a few quiet hours would be just the thing to take her mind off the festival for a while.

Nancy awoke early Thursday with a fresh sense of determination. With the festival in town for only three more days, she was impatient to unmask the mysterious note writer. After showering, she called Bess’s house. George, who had spent her day off helping J.Z. with some odds and ends, answered.

“You should get an award for being Super-Volunteer,” Nancy teased.

George groaned wearily. “I figure with all the construction tips I’ve been getting from J.Z., I should be able to build my own house someday,” she said. “Or at least my own balcony.”

Nancy laughed. “Maybe then you could find your Romeo,” she said. She told George about her meeting with Louis Romero, and then asked if anything unusual had happened on the festival grounds during the break.

“Well, Dean Batlan drove everyone crazy,” George said. “He ordered people around and told them what they were doing wrong. And, of course, he managed to complain about being underpaid every chance he got,” she finished.

“Hmm,” Nancy murmured, taking in this information with interest.

“You know, Josh Forster may be a little pompous himself,” George said, “but he’s the only one who’s able to put Dean in his place. I don’t think Dean likes him, but he seems to listen to him.”

“Was Martine around yesterday?” Nancy asked.

“I only saw her once,” George said.
