At 6 p.m., Randy hung the CLOSED sign on the door of the museum like he always did. Bill’s mop bucket was propping open the door of the men’s restroom. Cleaning the restrooms was the last thing he did every day. Randy hollered into the open door. “You want the usual, buddy?”

“You know I do,” Bill called back. “Thanks, buddy!”

Randy went outside and got into the very comfortable car the monster museum had made possible for him. He drove away from town and toward the interstate exit and pulled into the drive-thru at the Chicken Bucket.

“Thank you for choosing the Chicken Bucket. May I take your order?” the familiar voice on the intercom asked.

“Yes, you may, Melissa,” Randy said.

There was laughter over the intercom. “Oh, hi, Mr. Siler. Was you wanting a three-piece dark meal for your friend?”

“Yes, please. Two legs and a thigh.” He made the same order at the same time every day. It was important to keep Bill happy. Fortunately, it didn’t take much. Buying a daily box of chicken wasn’t like making a blood sacrifice or anything, and it was enough to pacify Bill and keep things running smoothly.

Randy took the food and drove back to the museum. By the time he got there, both of the restroom doors were shut, which meant that Bill had finished his cleaning. Randy walked through the museum all the way to the back to the door marked Private. He knocked.

“Just a minute,” Bill’s voice called.

When Randy had hired Bill all those years ago, part of the arrangement had been that Bill was welcome to live in the back room for free in exchange for keeping an eye on the place. Randy had thought this would be temporary, until Bill had saved up enough money for an apartment or house. But Bill had stayed in the back room for over a decade now. It was cozy, he said.

Bill answered the door in his undershirt and boxer shorts. “Sorry,” he said with a sheepish grin. “I’m changing. You can come on in, though.”

“Thanks,” Randy said, closing the door and locking it. “By the end of the day, I’m sure you’re glad to take all that off.”

“I sure am,” Bill said. He reached around to the back of his head to the little button that was hidden by his hair. When he touched it, the flesh on his head and face split into two perfectly symmetrical halves. Bill grabbed the two segments and pulled them down to neck level, then shoulder level, then chest level. Randy had witnessed this many times, but it never ceased to amaze him to see Bill peel himself like a banana.

As the human skin fell away, the room filled with a green glow. The figure, also green, hovered just above the human skin that now lay crumpled on the floor like an old raincoat. With its glowing red eyes, it stared at the box of fried chicken Randy held out as an offering.
