CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The fights continued for another couple of hours. Most of them ended fairly quickly, as one side or another made a mistake and left an opening. Slowly, the number of contestants dropped due to injury or extended losses. The first team fully removed was Oddali Academy, though they were in fourth place when the last was left with a broken leg. Princess Craesti was standing over him with her hands over her mouth. “I am so sorry! I thought you would dodge it!”

“I will be fine,” he ground out, “do not worry for me, Princess.”

“None of that, you get better quickly.” She gestured at the medics who were rushing over.

“Excellent! Princess Craesti has won her third fight in a row! Are you staying for a fourth, earning ten points for your team?” The announcer appeared next to her as his voice boomed through the stadium.

She looked at him and nodded. “Yes, I will fight another. With one more win I guarantee first place for my team!”

“Big risks meet big rewards. Now, I shall randomly determine your next opponent from those still available.” He threw a glowing ball of Aether into the sky. It circled around the arena twice, before dropping onto my head. “Kupiec Aiden, you are selected to fight.”

I stood and bowed. “So I will meet my Princess in martial combat.” Jon rolled his eyes at me, and laughed while I jumped onto the stage. I walked into the circle and bowed to Aleks. “Princess, I will endeavor to challenge you.”

“Of course, I only get to fight you after three others,” she grumbled as she bowed to me.

“You should have challenged someone else,” I laughed as we bowed to her father. She glared at me for a second, but I didn’t deign to acknowledge her. After bowing to the crowd and each other, I shoved all the Aether I could into my senses and brain meridians again. She’s Air, Lightning, and Fire primary like I am. That gives me some resistance to her attacks, while giving her some to mine. I really need some good ranged Earth attacks besides the Elemental Aether Blast. I then engaged my Divine Senses technique, and watched as a sheath of Air enveloped the Princess and her sword.

After stabilizing my techniques, I pushed Lightning and Metal into the Body Strengthening technique to increase speed and strength. At the command of “fight” we both darted at each other. While running, I sent an Aether Blast infused with Lightning and Fire Aether at her, while she sent an Air Aether based one back at me. I ducked underneath her attack, diving forward under the expected explosion of power. She cut my attack apart, expecting the Fire, and gasped as the Lightning part shocked her hand.

Unfortunately she managed to hang onto her sword, and I had to quickly block as I rolled to my feet. She had obviously not fought anyone with my type of weapon before, though, as I was able to lock her sword inside both my trisula.
