This time, The Passion Translation comes second. Did you spot the difference? It’s obvious, right? This verse teaches that the Holy Spirit empowers believers with different spiritual gifts to serve the church. But you can see that Simmons—by willy-nilly changing the word “manifestation” to “continuous revelation”—twists what the verse is about and makes it promote a NAR teaching: that the Holy Spirit is giving new revelation to every Christian and, moreover, that He is doing this continually. Yet this verse says no such thing!

Professor Craig Blomberg points out multiple problems created by Simmons’s mistranslation of this verse. For example, he notes that “instead of the Spirit distributing his gifts to believers as he sees fit”—which the verse teaches—“The Passion Translation insists that ‘each believer is given continuous revelation.’” 23 He also states that—even if the verse does refer to some type of “spiritual illumination” or prophetic gift—“it still does not provide a promise of anything constant.” And he adds that many gifts of the Spirit—such as giving, helping, administration, and faith—“really don’t have anything to do with revelation at all.”
