“Van, you gotta see this,” Kat called from the dining room.

A second later, Van showed up in the doorway. He whistled under his breath. “Holy mackerel. What is all this stuff?”

Kat sat down in front of Bazir’s computer and jiggled the mouse. The screen came to life, requesting a password. “Not sure, to be honest. From the looks of the old tech that’s sitting on the shelves over there in the corner, it looks like Bazir was a bit of a collector.”

Van raised his eyebrows. “That explains how he ended up with the SEEK II device.”

“But not where he is now.”

“Well, wherever he is, he wasn’t planning on leaving. His clothes, toothbrush, deodorant, all that kind of stuff is still upstairs.”

A chill ran down Kat’s spine. “So you’re thinking that wherever he is —”

Van’s eyes hardened. “He didn’t have a choice about going.”

Kat sighed and shook her head, staring at the computer. They needed answers and fast. “Man, I’d really like to be able to get in here and see what he was looking at.” Kat stared at the makeshift tables Bazir had been using as an oversized desk. It just seemed to be a huge tangle of cables and plugs and cords. Where they all led, she had no idea. Van was digging through a set of file drawers on wheels, a frown on his face. He stood up, staring at a single sheet of paper in his hand. He extended it toward Kat, raising a single eyebrow. “Here. This might help.”

“What is it?”

“Bazir’s passwords.”

“Are you kidding me? That was way too easy.” Kat started to laugh. Bazir, someone who did tech for a living, had printed off his passwords. She stared at the sheet of paper. Sure enough, there was a whole list of passwords typed out. “Why on earth would he do this?”

Van shook his head. “No idea. Maybe it’s too many to remember. Maybe there have been one too many times the students at Mountain View forgot theirs. Who knows. Found them in the back of this drawer.” Van looked up, grinning. “Not too creative. Everybody always keeps the most important stuff in the back of the drawer. Never the front. Like we all don’t know that it’s there.”

Kat smirked. Van was right. “All right. Let me try these. Hopefully, they aren’t as outdated as his Palm Pilot.” As she scanned the sheet of paper, she noticed all of the passwords were organized alphabetically. She scanned the page and found a listing for “dining room computer.”

Kat inputted the password into the computer and waited for a second. A moment later, the computer recognized the password and opened up. “We’re in!” she said to Van, glancing over her shoulder. He was digging through another drawer on the other side of the dining room.

A second later, Kat could feel Van’s body heat as he stepped behind her, resting his hand on the back of the chair she was sitting in. “Okay, let’s see what he was looking at.”

Kat stared at the screen, trying to get herself adjusted to what was in front of her.
