CHAPTER FIVE

THE SNOW WAS coming down in buckets. At least Callie was pretty sure it was. The champagne had hit her harder than a two-by-four, and her vision was now a little spotty. That was as good a reason as any for her to be in her room and away from the guests.

Away from Ace.

When she’d left the reception an hour earlier, the guests were still trying to catch the loose fowl, while Mildred and Birch were singing rather colorful Irish ditties and Christmas carols. Callie had finally gotten away from the mayor, who had insisted that she dance the fandango with him, and made a mad dash for the stairs. With luck, she could hide out until the snow cleared.

Or until starvation set in.

Or until she could no longer tolerate the dress.

Try as she might, she hadn’t been able to get out of it. The zipper had gotten stuck on the satin and wouldn’t budge. Nor would the strong-as-steel fabric tear. After she gave her arms a rest, she’d have to try again.

Her hiding out came to an abrupt halt when there was a knock at the door. Callie had every intention of ignoring it and pretending she wasn’t there, but then the man spoke.

“Callie, it’s me, Marty Jameson,” he said. “Can we talk?”

She frowned but got up and opened the door. Marty knew her, of course. Everyone knew everyone in Lone Star Ridge, but this was the first time Marty had sought her out.

“I want to offer you a job,” Marty went on without hesitating. He was tall, lanky and still had his looks. “The person who does my web page, fan club and stuff quit, and I need somebody right away. I’ve heard you do that kind of work, and you’d be able to do this job from home.”

Callie’s frown deepened. “Did my aunt put you up to this?”

“Yeah.” Again, no hesitation. He flashed her an easy grin. “But I really do need somebody, and Mildred showed me the stuff you’ve been doing for the gym where you work.” He took a card from his pocket. “That’s the name and number of my manager. Just give him a call, and he can get you started. He’ll also work out salary, benefits and junk like that with you.”

Now she huffed. “I don’t want a pity job.”

“Wasn’t offering pity,” he assured her. Another grin, followed by a shrug. “It’s a job. If you want it, it’s yours.” With his grin still in place, Marty made a glance over his shoulder. “Maybe you could think of it as a better dream.”

Callie came up on her tiptoes to see what Marty had glanced at. Ace. He was just up the hall and was sitting on the floor outside the room where Callie knew he was supposed to be staying.

“Call my manager if you’re interested in the job,” Marty repeated to her, and he strolled away, whistling and easing his hands into the pockets of his jeans.

Once Marty was gone, Callie shot Ace a frown.
