Maria froze. Her pulse thudded as vivid memories of the last time she saw Ji-Yeong flooded her mind. She recalled his tenderness as he sat with her in his lap on the bench in the shower. He simply cradled her in his arms after cleansing her body. They left the room with her tucked into his side, and he waited with her until her hired car came to pick her up. Maria didnât recall them exchanging numbers, but there was his name, big and bold, on her cellphone display.
âM.E.!â
âHuh?â Maria was snatched out of her memories by Tahliaâs voice.
âWhere did you go? Did something happen?â
It didnât cross Mariaâs mind to play it off. âUm... He just texted me.â
âWhich, He? Sam, He?â
âYes.â
âYâall exchanged numbers? Girl, that sounds like more than a one-time hook up.â
âI honestly donât remember doing it, but his name is right here on my screen and he just messaged me. So, itâs a good bet that it happened.â Maria gnawed on her bottom lip.
âWhat do I do, Tee?â It had been exactly twenty-six years since sheâd been at this stage with any man.
âIt depends. Did you have a good time with him?â
âYes.â
âYou obviously felt safe enough to give him your number. So, would you be interested in seeing him again?â
Mariaâs immediate thought was absolutely. But, it wasnât a question of if she wanted to see him, it was a matter of should she.
âI donât know if itâs a good idea for me to see him again.â
âWhy not?â
âBeing with a guy just for sex isnât my baseline. I think it might be better for me to end things here before I get attached.â
âDamn...He knocked those cobwebs off good didnât he?â
Maria frowned. Tahlia wasnât taking her concerns seriously. Maria allowed her silence to speak for her.
âCome on, M.E. We both know sex doesnât have to equal a relationship. So, tell me whatâs really bothering you.â
Maria recaptured her bottom lip. Her response was more of a mumble.
âExcuse me? I didnât understand you.â Tahlia was goading her, but Maria fell into the trap anyway.
âI said, heâs significantly younger than me.â
âHow young? Like Jared young?â
Maria shivered at the suggestion of doing what sheâd done with Ji-Yeong with someone her twenty-year old sonâs age.
âNo! Of course not.â
âThen what do you consider significantly younger?â
âAt least ten years.â
âWait. You donât know for sure?â
âI didnât exactly ask. I estimated based on how he looked. He had slight sprinkles of barely noticeable gray, but his skin was smooth. No wrinkles or even frown lines.â
âGirl, bye. That doesnât mean anything. You damn near have to show ID for people to believe youâre over thirty-five. For all you know the manâs genes could be blessing him with a youthful appearance.â
âI donât think so.â
âAnyway, it doesnât matter. Heâs not a child. Heâs an adult. An adult who is obviously interested in remaining connected to you. Itâs up to you to decide if you want to continue.â
âI donât know.â
âM.E., itâs not like the man is proposing marriage. He could be a nice distraction while youâre in the Windy City.
