Maria froze. Her pulse thudded as vivid memories of the last time she saw Ji-Yeong flooded her mind. She recalled his tenderness as he sat with her in his lap on the bench in the shower. He simply cradled her in his arms after cleansing her body. They left the room with her tucked into his side, and he waited with her until her hired car came to pick her up. Maria didn’t recall them exchanging numbers, but there was his name, big and bold, on her cellphone display.

“M.E.!”

“Huh?” Maria was snatched out of her memories by Tahlia’s voice.

“Where did you go? Did something happen?”

It didn’t cross Maria’s mind to play it off. “Um... He just texted me.”

“Which, He? Sam, He?”

“Yes.”

“Y’all exchanged numbers? Girl, that sounds like more than a one-time hook up.”

“I honestly don’t remember doing it, but his name is right here on my screen and he just messaged me. So, it’s a good bet that it happened.” Maria gnawed on her bottom lip.

“What do I do, Tee?” It had been exactly twenty-six years since she’d been at this stage with any man.

“It depends. Did you have a good time with him?”

“Yes.”

“You obviously felt safe enough to give him your number. So, would you be interested in seeing him again?”

Maria’s immediate thought was absolutely. But, it wasn’t a question of if she wanted to see him, it was a matter of should she.

“I don’t know if it’s a good idea for me to see him again.”

“Why not?”

“Being with a guy just for sex isn’t my baseline. I think it might be better for me to end things here before I get attached.”

“Damn...He knocked those cobwebs off good didn’t he?”

Maria frowned. Tahlia wasn’t taking her concerns seriously. Maria allowed her silence to speak for her.

“Come on, M.E. We both know sex doesn’t have to equal a relationship. So, tell me what’s really bothering you.”

Maria recaptured her bottom lip. Her response was more of a mumble.

“Excuse me? I didn’t understand you.” Tahlia was goading her, but Maria fell into the trap anyway.

“I said, he’s significantly younger than me.”

“How young? Like Jared young?”

Maria shivered at the suggestion of doing what she’d done with Ji-Yeong with someone her twenty-year old son’s age.

“No! Of course not.”

“Then what do you consider significantly younger?”

“At least ten years.”

“Wait. You don’t know for sure?”

“I didn’t exactly ask. I estimated based on how he looked. He had slight sprinkles of barely noticeable gray, but his skin was smooth. No wrinkles or even frown lines.”

“Girl, bye. That doesn’t mean anything. You damn near have to show ID for people to believe you’re over thirty-five. For all you know the man’s genes could be blessing him with a youthful appearance.”

“I don’t think so.”

“Anyway, it doesn’t matter. He’s not a child. He’s an adult. An adult who is obviously interested in remaining connected to you. It’s up to you to decide if you want to continue.”

“I don’t know.”

“M.E., it’s not like the man is proposing marriage. He could be a nice distraction while you’re in the Windy City.
