“When I was growing up, my family had two yellow Labs: Lady and Molly. Lady was a few years older, but she was like a puppy again when Molly came along. The two romped and played and snuffed at each other constantly. And when they were done, they curled up together for a nap. They were best friends.

When Lady died, Molly just wasn’t herself. She moped around the house and seemed disinterested on walks. We understood that she was mourning her friend. A couple of weeks went by, and I was taking Molly for our usual walk. Suddenly, I just had a feeling like I should take a different route. We ended up passing a grassy field, and Molly started tugging hard on her leash. Happy to see her interested in something, I decided to let her run around. (She was used to playing off leash.)

Molly ran into the middle of the field and started jumping, rolling around, and doing that ‘puppy pose’ thing dogs do when they play together. I just stood there, watching in amazement. Then she came running back to me, looking like she had something wonderful to tell me. It was like she was saying, ‘Did you see her, too?’ And there, right on Molly’s nose, was a ladybug. From that day on, Molly was back to her old self. It’s like she knew her friend was there whenever she needed her.”
