Chapter 17

McClung sat at his desk, deep in thought. It was too easy. The evidence he needed so easily found. Too perfect. It just didn’t feel right. But was he overthinking it? Maybe it was that simple. Nancy Kemper killed Jason Sparrow.

Why? To save her marriage? Jealousy? Perhaps Nancy learned that Robyn, Rebecca, Angela, and who knows who else were tangled up with Jason.

Maybe Nancy thought he was trying to buy her with cheap diamond studs. Like she wouldn’t know the difference. She was used to the finer things in life. She looked and acted rich. Surely, Jason could see that, or maybe his self-assurance had blinded him.

Or did Jason say something that ticked her off? McClung had witnessed her explosive outburst and sudden mood swings.

Officer Marsh had waited for Nancy and Dr. Kemper to return to their house. She was pretty vocal about not wanting to be handcuffed.

Marsh was fortunate that Dr. Kemper convinced his wife that it was in Ryan’s best interest if she cooperated with the police.

Nancy complied, but she wanted her husband by her side all the way.

Dr. Kemper explained he needed to get their lawyer first, and then he’d join her.

Nancy got into the patrol car on her own.

Marsh said it was his worst ride back to the station. He said that she constantly yelled about how she would sue the county and he would never work again as a police officer. Nancy claimed she had enough money to buy all the right people to do what she asked.

Now, why would she say a thing like that? Admit to bribery.

He dreaded going downstairs to interview her.

Nancy had been waiting for an hour. Forty-five minutes alone with her thoughts and fifteen with her attorney.

McClung stood and stretched. I doubt she has enough to buy herself out of this jam.

He stopped by Thayer’s desk.

“It’s showtime.”

The young sergeant dropped his elbows on his desk and cradled his head in his hands.

“Praying?”

“Yes, sir, for Nancy to have some self-control and for me not to lose it.”

“Miracles happen all the time.” McClung headed toward the elevator, then stopped. “On second thought, let’s take the stairs.”

“Just prolonging it.”

McClung smiled. “Yeah, but I think we need to change our direction on the interview. I want to give you my thoughts before we enter the room.”

“What are you thinking?”

“We let her think that we believe she’s innocent.”

Thayer hesitated. “You mean you think she’s not?”

McClung shrugged.

“Aw, come on. We found a bloody earring and bloody tissues. The calendar with Js written everywhere and a condom. Plus, Mrs. Kemper has a temper and motive.”

“We don’t know yet if the blood matches Jason’s or if she used the tissue for a nosebleed Ryan may have had. For all we know, Jason and Ryan may have the same blood type. Then what?”

“Yeah, but the earring.”

McClung shook his finger. “You have to keep an open mind. Not everything is what it seems to be.”

“I know.”

“Besides, Nancy may think she can lie her way out of this. So let’s listen to what she has to say.
