… Nothing changes.

Absolutely nothing.

I keep waiting for a blinding flash of light, or a sound, some sign that they’re here.

I’m ready, I tell them again, but nothing comes.

I keep breathing and focusing, and the seconds tick by, and slowly the floating feeling drains out of my body, and with it everything hopeful that was left in me.

I don’t know how much time passes, but bit by bit all the electricity just fizzles out. The tingling in my arms and legs stops, and I can feel the hard floor under my body again.

There’s no bright light, no long-fingered green men, no floating disk in the sky. I never wanted them, but now I know they’re not coming, know it deeper than ever before, and it feels terrible. All around me, people are breathing in unison, desperately wanting something they can’t have. Daniel’s eyes are scrunched shut, his hands reaching out stiffly like a paper doll’s. I can see how hard he’s trying, how hard everyone is trying. It would be ridiculous if it weren’t so incredibly, brutally sad.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt this empty in my life.
