CHAPTER 12

Jordan stayed up waiting for Camila to return. He had to know she was all right. Yes, it was probably childish, foolish, whatever you want to call it, but this was a dangerous case and he worried about her safety. He worried about another child being taken or even Camila being snatched.

If the bad guy was to learn who was on this case, he might try to take her and sell her, and that terrified Jordan. It was way too soon for his heart to get involved with this woman, but he cared about her. And that caused him to worry.

It was midnight when she walked into the house.

“Hi,” she said. “I didn’t expect you to wait up for me.”

“I know,” he said. “Call me an old worry wart, but I wanted to make certain you got home safely. How was your brother?”

She smiled and he could see she’d had a good time. “They’re so happy. Next week they leave on their honeymoon cruise and then they’re going to New York to pack up Stacy’s apartment.”

Stacy was perfect for his brother and Trevor. He could see they were happy, and in some ways, he was a little jealous. That was what he wanted with someone.

“My family really likes her and is so glad she helped my brother settle down,” Jordan said.

Shaking her head, she sighed. “Why do I forget that Luis is your brother?”

“Don’t know. We’re a big family and my mother is just dying for all of us to get married and give her grandkids.”

And now he knew exactly who he wanted to have children with. Camila. It was early in their relationship, if you could even call it that. But Ely was right. She fit in with them. It felt right. It was easy, and damn she was hot. When she walked into a room, he was overwhelmed at just the sight of her.

He loved her humor, how direct she was, and how she let him know what she wanted. There was no guessing with Camila. Now if only she would trust them.

“It’s strange to hear my brother Trevor talking about kids. It makes me protective and this child isn’t even conceived yet.”

He nodded. Camila would be a great mother. Protective and loving, and what was he doing? They had known each other less than a week and she didn’t even have confidence in them. And yet the thought of her body rounded with his child was a complete turn-on. He’d waited a long time and now it seemed like his dreams were within his reach. Dreams with this woman, and that surprised him.

Three lawfolk in the same family. It would be daunting.

“What did you guys do?”

“We worked at the office until about an hour ago. Ely is out in the hot tub. He is frustrated because we had nothing new. The parents want us to come speak to them tomorrow.”

“Can’t,” she said. “I have to meet my boss in San Antonio.”

“Is he taking you off the case?”

No, he didn’t want her to leave.
