Chapter Thirteen

Ollie

Once Devon had left for work, I reluctantly undressed and walked into the bathroom. Being a cat was so much easier. I never had to worry about what I wanted for my next meal, and I never had to shower. Ugh.

But turning into human had gotten me Devon, so I couldn’t really complain. If wanting Devon meant I also had to deal with pesky things like showers, then so be it.

Blowing out a breath, I mulled over how I was going to show Devon how strong he was. It wasn’t like I could challenge him to a fight or anything.

I turned on the showerhead and shrieked as freezing cold water rained down on me, and I leaped out of the range of the spray.

Hastily, I turned off the knob before staring at it like it might try to jump up and bite me. What was that? Why was the water so cold? It was practically icy!

Devon’s words from earlier filtered back into my mind. He’d said he’d taken a cold shower when I’d asked why his skin was cool to the touch. I hadn’t expected that to mean freezing cold.

I shook my head as a shiver raced through me. Why would Devon take a shower with water so cold? It felt horrible, like the worst kind of punishment anyone could endure.

Punishment. Was that what it was? Had Devon been punishing himself? Why? Why would he ever do something like that?

I didn’t understand, and I felt stupid because of it. Devon thought he wasn’t strong, and he was so, so wrong. He was the strongest person I knew. He was also the kindest, sweetest man I knew. He didn’t see any of my shortcomings—I was illiterate, I didn’t understand a lot of human things…I could go on and on—and yet, he saw flaws in himself that didn’t even exist.

I needed to change that. But how?

I grabbed a towel and wiped myself off, deciding I’d take a proper shower in the evening. After that torture, I wanted to stay far away from the shower. I also didn’t know how to make the water warm again, so it wasn’t like I had options unless I wanted to call Noel and ask him. I shook my head at the thought. I didn’t need a shower that bad.

After I’d dressed in appropriate clothes, I took a moment to comb my hair, wondering if I should cut it short like Caleb’s or let it grow longer. Devon seemed to like playing with my hair, so maybe I’d let it be.

Once done, I fed Dannie some of her food, gave her a wave, and walked out of the cabin. I was a little hungry, but my mind was too consumed by thoughts of Devon to actually eat.

I didn’t have to look far for Noel, which I was grateful for, and I caught up to him as he headed toward a small cabin near the gathering hall.

“Hey, Noel. Do you have a moment?”

“Good morning, Ollie!” Noel greeted me with a smile before peeking into the cabin.
