CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Holly Summers, Grant County, Kentucky

Clint pulled the pickup past the house and stopped in full view of the field and backyard, smiling when Carol and Regan greeted them with waves and claps. Holly matched his grin, popping the door and stepping out, catching Big Boy as he loped up, leaped with his paws slapping on her before dashing away. Skinny and Daisy swept around the truck to greet her, and Holly rubbed each on the head before they went trotting off.

“You guys did it!” Regan threw her arms over the side rail and stared, wide-eyed, at the tied-down generators in the back of the pickup.

“We sure did,” Holly said, leaning against the side of the truck and grinning at their take, fighting a frown as an image of Clay Wright being back in town flashed in her mind. “Got two nice new generators for us.”

“That’s right!” Clint called, shutting the door behind him and greeting Carol with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “I doubt we’ll run out of power for a long time now.”

“And we won’t lose all the meat in the freezer, or the milk.” Carol patted Clint on the chest and peered inside the truck bed. “Was it hard?”

Holly exchanged a quick glance with Clint before he responded. “It wasn’t too bad. The worst part was carrying these puppies up the basement stairs. Once we got them to the truck, it was all good.”

“These look brand-new!” Regan said, leaning in and rubbing her hand across the shiny tops. “Grandpa, can you show me how to hook them up?”

“I sure will.”

“After chores,” Holly reminded them pointedly. “What’s all left to do?”

“We just have to feed the pigs and milk Louise, then clean everything up.”

“I’ll join you right after we get these generators off the truck.”

Clint put the tailgate down, and he and Holly climbed into the truck bed, disconnecting the bungees and chains and rolling the generators to the edge. One at a time, they got them off and set them on the gravel driveway.

“I can take it from here,” Clint said, lifting the handle on one and pushing it up toward the house on its wheels. “You go ahead and help them with their chores if you want.”

“Okay, ladies,” Holly said, “let’s finish up.”

Regan grabbed the wheelbarrow handles and started wheeling it, along with buckets of pig feed, down toward the pens. Carol locked arms with Holly, and the dogs trotted behind them the whole way. Holly couldn’t help but sight-check the eastern tree line, marking all the spots she wanted to start clearing the next chance they got... and looking to catch shadows or signs anyone was there.

Carol said something, and Holly snapped out of her stare. “What was that, Mom?”

“I was asking what you thought you might want for dinner tonight.”

“Oh, I don’t know.” Holly passed off a faint smile. “I’m sure whatever you make will be amazing.” When Skinny and Daisy zipped by and caught up with Regan, Holly called, “Honey,
