HAPTER FIVE

BY THE TIME Boone came downstairs, Becky was gone. Damn it to hell, she’d snuck out of his bed like a thief in the night. The pain that had shot through him when he’d discovered her side of the bed empty had been paralyzing. He’d been ready to stay in bed with her and say to hell with the ranch and the whole damn day. It was an action so foreign that he couldn’t wrap his mind around it. He’d been willing to shrug away a lifetime of discipline for just a few more minutes in her arms. No other woman had ever made him feel that way. Not that he dropped into bed with every woman he met. Even so, he was experienced enough to know that what he’d shared last night with Becky wasn’t just about sex.

What was he supposed to do now though? Admitting that he wanted more than a night with her didn’t change the fact that it was all he was going to have

The back door creaked in protest but Boone barely noticed.

“Hey boss, you still in here?” Jeb walked into the kitchen and it took everything inside Boone not to growl at the man. Instead, he offered him coffee, same as he did every morning.

“No, thanks. Jeb declined the offer, just as he did every morning. “Cordelia’s plied me with three cups already. My eyeballs are swimming.”

Boone grunted in response as he walked to the mudroom to grab his boots. Stomping into them gave him a small amount of satisfaction. It was how his heart felt at the moment. As if Becky had pulled it from his chest and ground it into the dirt beneath her high-heeled shoes. He closed his eyes, breathing deeply to regain his control. He had taken what she offered last night with his eyes wide open. It was exactly what he wanted. No strings, no long-term commitment. So why was he feeling like he’d been used?

He strode out the door, Jeb walking beside him. “Do we have any more calves about to drop?” He needed some hard, physical labor today – and some place away from the ranch. Finally, the damn director was actually going to take some shots of his fields and the kitchen garden Cordelia had planted.

“Nope, but that irrigation system you’re always bragging about has sprung a leak.”

“A leak?” One of Boone’s dark brows rose.

“Yup. One of the hands rode past early this morning and reported it.” Jeb opened the kitchen door and Boone followed him out.

“Well, damn.”

“They’re leaving today, aren’t they?”

“Yes.” Another stab of pain sliced through his chest.

“Sure will be nice to have the ranch back to normal, won’t it boss?”

They walked in silence for a moment more. Boone’s mind churning with images from last night, remembering how Becky had come apart in his arms. He could still taste her.

“It’s a shame to see them go, though. Especially that Becky. She turned out to be real nice, didn’t she?” Jeb asked, noting the strained look on Boone’s face.
