MICKEY SPILLANE

THE GOLD FEVER TAPES

Mickey Spillane (b. 1918) is the tough-guy writer everyone has heard of, along with his private eye Mike Hammer. Spillane appears in television beer commercials. When his name was an answer on the Wheel of Fortune TV game show, it was guessed immediately (category: author, a job description he claims to loathe; the preferred title is writer, and readers are called customers). In the 1950s, well-thumbed paperback copies of I, the Jury were passed around high school locker rooms as though they were pornography—which says more about the 1950s than about the salacious quality of the novel.

I, the Jury was published in 1947, Vengeance Is Mine! and My Gun Is Quick in 1950. Kiss Me, Deadly in 1952. The Mike Hammer novels, about a dozen in all, arrived with the postwar paperback boom. A later, less popular (and more political) Spillane hero is Tiger Mann, who spends a good deal of his time battling Soviet agents.

Perhaps his paperback popularity harmed his critical reputation; Spillane has never won the intellectual following that more down-and-out hard-boiled writers have attracted.

“The Gold Fever Tapes,” anachronistic as it may seem, was first published in the 1973 issue of Stag Annual.
