CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Bound by Love

I STUMBLE TO my own bed at nearly eight o’clock that night and sleep until the early morning, when I wake to Kasimir’s fingers curled around the soft part of my stomach, the hard length of him against my back. I twist and sigh and seek the necessary before climbing back in bed to savor his warmth.

“Bonjour, mon petite chou,” he whispers in my ear.

“Bonjour,” I whisper back.

“Did she sleep?” Kasimir asks, kissing my neck and tugging me so close that our two bodies become one tangled mass of bone and muscle, hardness and soft skin.

“At six bells this morning, briefly, and even then not well. We sponged her with alcohol though and changed the sheets again. I left her listening to Bernice sing. I hope the poor girl got a chance to sleep. We should get her a new dress and give her time off to visit her mother, for all this work.”

Past the brocaded shadow and fringe of the curtains, the sun shines on a new day. The floor and walls of the room lay crisscrossed by bars of shadow and light. In the shadow on my dresser sits the blue satin box, untouched.

I huff and push against Kasimir.

“Hmmmm.” I feel rather than see his smile. He kneads my shoulders and back, squeezing and rolling everywhere that aches. “I think it’s time to give you a bit of pleasure for every drop of pain.”

“I’m too tired,” It’s true, but already I feel a pulse of heat between my legs.

“Then let me do all the work,” Kasimir whispers, rolling me onto my back. He kisses my mouth and then along my neck.

“There,” I say, letting the pleasure tighten into pinpoint pricks as he kneads and kisses and licks. “Yes.”

Kasimir runs his hands along the seam of my legs and then back up to cup my waist.

I try to pull him on top of me, but he resists, kissing downward to the soft places on my stomach and then lower.

I send a long breath out, as little shocks play outward from my core. Slowly, slowly, my fatigue falls away as excitement breathes new life into my bruised body. He whispers occasionally against my thighs, and kisses and licks, until finally I cry out in pleasure.

“Up,” I say, tugging him over me so we can move together in rhythm. It is not long before he urges me into another peak of pleasure. The next moment, he meets me. Then we are both trying to stay quiet in the morning stillness.

Afterward, I nod and tug him back up and arms around me, where he bites my neck, making me shiver. “I could sleep if I were still for more than a few moments, but I should check on Elina.” I move toward the edge of the bed.

“In a moment…” Kasimir runs his fingers lightly along the inside of my arm and around my shoulder and neck. “Just wait a moment here with me.” Twined together as two trees, I fall back asleep.
