Gabriel could sense how much Audrey wanted to get back to work, but he couldn’t let the piece go just yet. Even unfinished, it captured the attention and held it hostage. ‘This needs to be shown.’

‘I beg your pardon.’

Her incredulity had him smiling. Maybe once she saw other people’s reactions to her work, she would finally start to believe in herself. Before the summer was over, they might have enough of her work assembled to hold an exhibition.

‘How many exhibitions have you been to since arriving in Italy?’

‘Only a couple. I saw one in Rome before coming to Lake Como, and then another in Como. Though I have spent a lot of time at the art gallery.’

‘Would you like to attend the new exhibition at the Galleria Pensiero with me in a fortnight?’

She started to dance on the spot. ‘Are you serious? I’d give my eyeteeth to go to an opening night like that one.’

He shook his head, but he suspected his eyes might be dancing, too. ‘Then you need to tell Marguerite’s secretary and she will ensure you get all such future invitations.’

Her mouth dropped open. ‘Just like that?’

He couldn’t explain why, but she made him want to laugh; she made him feel young again. Even now she had no idea what doors her name and fortune could open for her. ‘Just like that.’

‘Wow.’

‘But in this instance, you can come as my guest, yes? There are several people from the art world I would like you to meet.’

‘Are you sure it’s no bother?’

‘Of course it isn’t. It will be an interesting night and should be fun to compare opinions on the different pieces. Consider it part of your ongoing education.’

‘Then thank you. I’d like that very much.’
