Dick Liccardi’s UAV crew sat in pitch dark beside the runway huddled around a stack of equipment boxes. The team had done a quick and thorough job of packing what needed to go and destroying everything else. A message arrived just before dark indicating they would be picked up by Chinese helicopter sometime between midnight and 0200 for further transfer to an airfield where they would be met by a private jet that would deliver them to Seoul. It was practically the reverse of the method used to insert them three weeks prior, but they’d be going out with a lot less baggage than they brought into China.

Julia Dewey volunteered to stay with the assembled gear when Liccardi ordered a final sweep of the area. When she saw the beams of three flashlights disappear into the pine forest behind the bunkers, she pulled out her cell phone and began to compose a message about the situation in North Korea and the reason for abandoning the UAV mission. When she had the essential details keyed into her phone, she punched up the private number Gunner Shake Davis had quietly given her before he left and hit send. It was the least she could do for a fellow Marine who was about to be cut off deep in enemy territory.
