Chapter Twelve

The Mullinses were in uproar. Except, they couldn’t actually sound angry or upset so they were just talking in loud, unexcited voices.

“Are you sure they were all there yesterday?”

“Raymond, I may be over a hundred years old, but I am not senile. Of course they were all there. According to Agent Hunt, when she sent a team to check the lab they found Number Twenty-Two’s cage bars bent open and he was gone.”

“It’s probably hiding under a table or something,” said Ray.

Dr. Mullins looked at Howie. “You said the second attack happened on Burnaby Mountain?”

He nodded.

Dr. Mullins ran his hands through his hair and then covered his face. “I can’t understand it. They’re sending someone over to interrogate all of us, and then I’ll go to the lab and help them figure out how this could have occurred.”

“They’re coming here?” Howie stood up. “I should take Stella home.”

“What, and miss all the excitement? I’m not going anywhere.” I put my hands on my hips and frowned at Howie.

“You know too much, and even if I hadn’t told you by now you probably would’ve figured it out. That means you know confidential information.”

“It’s not my fault zombies attacked me.”

“I’d still rather you stay out of their sight. They’re going to be wrapped up in figuring out how the hamster got out, so…”

“Hamster? It’s not a rat, it’s a hamster?”

“Yes,” said Dr. Mullins, “I began using hamsters instead of rats for several reasons. First of all…”

“Not now, Dad,” said Hazel.

“She might as well stay. They’re going to have to talk to her at some point. They’re not going to just forget,” said Ray to Howie.

“Her parents would notice if I don’t bring her home tonight. I promised her dad I’d deliver her home safe.”

“You make me sound like a parcel,” I snarled. “No one DELIVERS ME anywhere.”

“Then please allow me to escort you to your home before angry government officials show up and want to know how much you know.”

“Fine. You know, today turned out a lot different than I expected.”

“Life is full of surprises,” said Howie with an attempt at a smile. “And undeath even more so.”
