SOMEWHERE NORTH OF VITEBSK

Alecof’s feet sifted through the snow as he leaned into the oncoming wind. There had not been any storms yet this winter. This looked to be a big one. He had just locked his cattle up in the barn for the day so that they would not wander off and freeze. He made his way up the slight hill along the forest toward his cabin, happy to have completed his work before the weather worsened.

“Come on, Sasha!” He called under the hood of his jacket without looking out into the wind. He heard the furry white dog bark off in the woods and scoffed. “What is he doing?”

Alecof stopped in his trek up to the cabin and glanced toward the woods to locate his dog. When he spotted the salt-and-pepper backed wolfhound, he called again with more force, “Come on! Let’s go inside!”

Sasha widened his stance and barked again at Alecof, showing his determination. He ran back farther into the woods, but stopped to look back at his master.

Alecof heard a high-pitched whine this time and took a step toward the woods. Sasha didn’t disobey. He was always at Alecof’s side as his protector and companion. Something was wrong.

Alecof started into the woods and squinted against the frigid wind. He wanted to get back to his cabin and start a fire. A cow better not have wandered off into the woods. It would give him at least an extra hour of work trying to get it back in the barn in the degrading weather.

Sasha barked again excitedly up in the distance. Alecof brought his head up into the wind to see if he could spot what the dog was so worked up about. He stopped instantly at the sight of a body face down in the snow.

There was a sizable blurb of red on the person’s leg and one gloved hand clutched a rifle. Alecof looked around the woods cautiously, but did not see anyone. He slowly approached and saw that fading footsteps and a blood trail continued farther into the woods.

When he reached the body he crouched down and tugged the rifle away. Sasha had his snout pressed to the person’s face, and Alecof shooed him away so that he could see the wretched soul. Cautiously, he grasped the fur of their hat and pulled it away.

He caught his breath at the sight of a woman, possibly several years younger than him. A long brown braid tumbled across her shoulder from where it had been tucked inside the hat. Her color was pale and he could not tell if her back was rising under the bulky coat she wore. Sasha whimpered and wagged his tail as he looked down helplessly at the woman.

Alecof reached into his pocket and pulled out his pocket watch. He held it down in front of the woman’s nose and after a few seconds, steam appeared on the surface.

“My God,” he whispered.

He slung the rifle over his shoulder and picked up the hat.
