Nash sat in the living room, waiting for his dad to wake up. He had to convince him to drive him out to Whiting Park. Nash had tried multiple times to fall back to sleep in order to find Caleb, but it wasn’t happening. The park was about six miles from Nash, so if his dad said no, he’d find some other way. He’d walk if he had to.

Then it hit him, a jolt a fear that suddenly gripped him. What if this all really was nothing more than a dream? What if there was no real person named Caleb but that Nash had merely created him as part of an elaborate, dreamy fantasy. He’d be crushed and humiliated to get out to the park and discover the whole endeavor had been nothing more than wishful thinking.

And how was he going to explain this to his dad? He’d think Nash had lost his mind.

He picked up his phone and typed in another text for Cala. He knew she wasn’t up yet, otherwise she’d have answered his previous three messages. But her boyfriend Jeremy had a car, and if Nash couldn’t get his dad to drive him, maybe she could ask Jeremy.

He thought about the Cedar Point dream. It had seemed so real, but on the other hand, he had never actually been there, so how did he know if he hadn’t simply imagined it all? Yet he’d observed so many details, so many little things he would not have even known to dream about. Before the dream, he didn’t know the names of all the roller coasters. He didn’t know Soak City was Cedar Point’s water park. He had no way of formulating a mental image of the park layout.

After Nash woke up and realized he couldn’t get back to sleep, he visited the Cedar Point website. Everything he saw in the pictures coincided with what he’d seen in his dream. Had he looked at the site before? Surely he would have remembered that, but he didn’t.

And Caleb had divulged details about himself. He’d talked about his mom and stepdad, and he’d told Nash how his parents hadn’t accepted him for being gay. To Nash, this personal revelation seemed more of a proof than the details of the theme park. He’d seen the sadness in Caleb’s eyes, felt his despair. Oh God, if only he could find Caleb, Nash would do everything in his power to help him through this really horrible time in his life.

Nash felt guilty for the self-pity he’d previously wallowed in. Sure, it sucked being the only openly gay kid in school, but at least his dad loved and accepted him. At least Nash had a few really close friends. He had cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents who all knew he was gay and didn’t even care. Poor Caleb didn’t have any of that support. He just had himself, and it really sucked. Nash pounded his fist against the arm of the chair, frustrated.
