CHAPTER

TWENTY-FOUR

WASHINGTON, D.C

J.D. Blunt awoke to the sweet sound of his holding cell being unlocked. He rolled out of his cot and put his feet on the floor as he squinted in the direction of the FBI agent jangling his keys.

“It’s your lucky day, senator,” the agent said.

“Former senator,” Blunt corrected. “And I’m not sure why you’d say there’s anything lucky about this day for me.”

“You’re getting out. You’re free to go.”

“All charges have been dropped?” Blunt asked.

“Not exactly,” the agent said as he ushered Blunt out of the cell.

“I wouldn’t consider today lucky then. Just another continuation of miscarriage of justice.”

“Save it for the judge,” the agent said. “I don’t make the rules. And as I recall, that was your job at one time.”

“The problem isn’t the rules. The problem is the people who arbitrarily enforce them.”

The agent ignored Blunt’s slight. “Your lawyer will meet you in the lobby where you’ll have some paperwork to sign and then you’ll be released.”

Blunt lumbered down the hall. “Do you have my cane?”

“What for?” the agent asked. “You seem to be walking just fine to me.”

“Are you aware of the term crutch?”

“It’s something weak men use.”

“Quite the opposite,” Blunt said. “It’s what strong men use, men who know that they can’t do everything on their own.”

“Is walking really that difficult for you?”

Blunt glared at him. “I just might have to use it to beat you over the head.”

“And that’s exactly why you won’t get it until you’re exiting the building. Good luck, Senator Blunt.”

Another agent stood waiting by a desk with Rob Fulchum.

“Please, sir,” the agent said. “We have some paperwork we need you to fill out.”

“I want my cane,” Blunt said with a growl.

“I’ll get that brought over to you while we’re signing some forms here.”

“I’m not signing anything until I have my cane,” Blunt said.

He reached his hand out to Fulchum.

“Wish I could’ve gotten you out of here sooner,” Fulchum said. “But this was the best I could do.”

“Who’d you have to call to pull off this favor?” Blunt asked.

“I asked Salisbury to lean on the bureau a little bit,” Fulchum said. “We still have a ways to go before we can get them to drop these ridiculous charges, but I’m sure it will happen in short order.”

“What about the thing I asked you to do?” Blunt asked.

“It’s all set up. We’re going to meet her as soon as we’re done here.”

A moment later, another agent presented Blunt with his cane. “Here you go, sir.”

Blunt snatched it and banged it on the ground a couple of times. “Now, let’s get this over with.”
