WAITING

The weekend takes forever. I try to occupy my mind with math homework and anime. Mom lets me choose the restaurant for takeout. I pick Italian and fill up on meatballs and greasy garlic bread. Someone’s letting himself go, Aaron says. I punch his arm and tell him to shut up. Mom makes us stop fighting. Tells me it’ll all work out the way it is supposed to. Whatever that means.

SUNDAY NIGHT

My phone pings. A number I don’t recognize. OMG I can’t stand this! I stare at the text. Wonder who it is. Another ping. btw this is Brayden aka batty The team nicknamed him Batty because his ears stick straight out like bat ears. I add him to my contacts. Start to respond, then suddenly worry that one of us will make the team, and the other won’t. I type 100. Ignore his response. Go scoop myself a giant bowl of chocolate ice cream.
