When I get there, Naomiâs halfway between the stage and the door. âThere you are,â she says in English. âDid you enjoy my lecture?â
âYes.â
âInteresting. I thought you found it inaccurate.â
I check that sheâs not annoyed. âNo. It was just making me think.â
âSome job satisfaction for me.â She narrows her eyes. âI didnât expect you to turn up in a lecture.â
âI mean, I was going to try to find you, but this was honestly a coincidence.â
âA coincidence.â She looks at me for a beat too long. Then, âI owe you your fee. Will you come to my office?â
I guess she wants to talk. âSure.â
Naomiâs office is more colourful than I expected. There are prints and photos and red and purple flowers lining her window sill. Itâs smaller than I thought it would be, and shabbier. She settles herself behind the desk and I sit on the other side, back in my student role.
âPeople are order and chaos. But isnât there more chaos than order?â I donât know why this is what comes out of my mouth first.
âWe live in a system much bigger than us and we have to obey its rules. But anomalies,â she says, âexist. Donât they?â
âYou know they do.â
Naomi looks at me with a hint of amusement. âSo. What happened after you got caught?â
âThey asked me questions. I donât know why theyâre so protective of their little crops.â
âWhy were you so interested in them?â she asks.
I shrug. âIt just seemed weird. Like ⦠what are they doing?â
âTheyâre finding ways to make money, I assume. Thatâs generally the explanation.â
âGrowing stuff isnât a finding.â
âThe method could be. What do you think?â She waits, not as if sheâs a teacher waiting for the correct answer, but as if sheâs interested in what I have to say.
âI guess,â I say, âthey can grow faster in some places, which means more money. Slower⦠Itâs not true that eating slow food actually makes you age less.â I stop. âIs it?â
Naomi says, âNot that I know of. However, that doesnât mean itâs untrue and neither does it mean that it couldnât be sold as that.â
âIt must be illegal or something.â
âThere are all kinds of products that havenât been proven to work but are used anyway. Because why not try it, if thereâs a chance? We buy things out of hope, not proof.â
âSo the company really isnât doing anything evil.â My disappointment makes me realise that Iâd been counting on them being a sinister corporation. âThey donât even have to market stuff as anti-ageing miracle cures. They can use the land and the time to grow as much as they can. Or raise animals or whatever. I suppose they donât have to be evil to be bad. They can just be capitalist and want to make money.â This is a really dumb revelation.
âThatâs not really that bad, or it certainly isnât considered so by most people. Iâm sure it would help the area, which everybody is always in favour of,â Naomi points out.
So in favour of that, theyâll ignore how bad it can be for people actually working there until itâs too late.
