Part Seven: Destroyer of Realms

"These are all the major events of the city," he said, pushing one of the ruins in and bringing up a second smaller shimmering image. "Here. Here is the last recording that the ruin’s stones have record of. It was close to one hundred years ago. I see the temperature grew to an extreme in one section of the city before." He pointed at the screen, but none of them were able to read what he pointed at. "One of our energy crystals, one that we stole from the Dwemhar," he added. "We couldn't get any more energy crystals, so we took the material we found deep in the mountains and refined it into a form in which we could draw energy as we wished. It was this system that allowed us to create our weapon."

"Your weapon came from creating energy?" Aeveam asked.

"You cannot create energy as you think," Rungar said. "Even with a Rusis's power, we are not creating anything, yet we are destroying our own life force. It is why we get tired when we cast, and if we cast for too long, we can fall unconscious. While, of course, you can train yourself to do more, or in my case, channel through something like these gauntlets," he said, pointing to his wrists. "We simply took our knowledge of one thing and dug deeper, using that energy to create even more energy from the division of that energy."

"I feel like I need to be drinking," Ordak said.

Millia nodded with him.

"The weapon," Nurocas said, "we are here for the weapon. We are not here to discuss energy and creation and procreation and whatever else you Rusis feel we need to discuss. We have been here a while, and my knees are starting to hurt, not to mention my lungs. Whatever is out there outside the sanctum is not good for dwarves."

"It isn't good for anyone," Rungar said. "The very air outside is poisonous. There is nothing we can do at this point but get what we need and get out."

“Will this spread?" Evurn asked.

"Is this the danger to the oceans and that beyond the mountains?"

Rungar shrugged. "I do not believe so considering this is happening within our realm. I believe other places are safe. Even if not, there is little we can do beyond veiling the magic that is already here. But I do believe this place will remain in the state it is now. For that, I have a sadness that I can’t explain. We Rusis never wish to hurt the natural world in any form, yet I am happy that this happened here, and just saying that," he said with tears welling in his eyes, "to say that of such a holy place, well."

He turned from the pedestal and motioned for them to follow. "We go this way. We came all this way, and from everything I can see, this area is safe. We will get the weapon and get back to our ship.
