CHAPTER ELEVEN

The Hayward and San Andreas Faults

Day Twenty-six

Fred flew their Black Hawk on a northerly trajectory a few hundred yards behind the second helicopter which carried Flannery and more soldiers, along with the two women. Both of the birds flew at a low altitude, the pilots wisely choosing to stay below the ever thickening blanket of debris and ash which completely blocked the sun.

Ripley stole a look at her watch as she stayed bent over, clasping her belly, pretending to be fighting motion sickness. The helicopters had lifted off from the broken asphalt at the National Lab only a few minutes before Ripley expected the next earthquakes to hit, and she’d managed to get the people she cared about on board. She’d done her best to get all the people who were living on the crumbling bit of rock that still rose above the Pacific ocean evacuated as well, but her pleas had fallen on deaf ears. Chang, their ostensible leader, had been too immersed in his plans to take over what was left of the United States to see the danger that was literally at his feet.

Emerson bent low next to her, talking in her ear so she could hear him above the noise of the helicopter, since none of the passengers had been given sound-muffling helmets with an intercom system which would allow them to speak to each other easily. Only Fred and Tanner, who sat in the co-pilot seat, had them.

Ripley shook her head surreptitiously, then tapped her watch. He gave her a pat on the back to let her know he’d gotten the message just as one of their guards nudged him with the end of his rifle and shouted at him to lean back and not talk. Emerson raised his hands in the air and settled back into his seat.

Ripley bent completely over, her head between her knees as she counted the minutes until the next quake. If it were a small one, all of her work to get them in the air would be for nothing, as Chang’s orders were for them to be back in an hour. Once they were ensconced back at the base, Ripley was sure he wouldn’t let them have access to the helicopter again. They were valuable assets and cost a lot in terms of fuel to operate.

An N95 mask dangled in front of Ripley’s face. She looked at the kindly visage of Emerson, who pointed outside as he urged it into her hands. Emerson passed masks to everyone, using his long arm to reach the front of the helicopter with a mask for Tanner, who slipped it on under his helmet. Fred waved his off, pointing at the oxygen tank he was using. Ripley coughed as she placed the rudimentary protection over her nose and mouth. The closer they got to the enormous rift in the earth and the toxic gases it belched, the worse the stench of the air had become, the
