Chapter 4
Gradually, the fragrances of the morning built up until they finally reached a peak before slowly beginning to disperse once more.
Caroline was devastated.
She had thought that she and Mr. Ashby had a genuine connection, and couldn't understand why he had suddenly changed his mind. It wasn't until she overheard a conversation between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Ashby that she realized the truth.
Caroline had visited Pemberley to see Lady Catherine de Bourgh, a woman she had always admired for her family's prestigious history and her unyielding adherence to propriety. Caroline stepped out of the carriage and looked up at the grand facade of the mansion before her. The building was an imposing edifice of stone and brick, with tall columns flanking the entrance and a wrought-iron gate at the front. She smoothed down her skirts, taking care not to wrinkle the delicate fabric of her gown.
As Caroline approached the entrance, she caught snippets of a conversation between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Ashby. She hadn't meant to eavesdrop, but the mention of her name drew her attention.
Mr. Darcy said. "I must say, Mr. Ashby, I was surprised to hear that you and Miss Bingley had grown close."
Mr. Ashby, hesitating, replied, "Yes, well, I must admit that I have had a change of heart. I thought there was something special between us, but I have realized that we are not suited to one another."
Caroline's heart ached at these words. Unable to bear the pain, she turned back and climbed into her carriage, leaving without being announced.
As the carriage rumbled down the gravel path, Caroline tried to hold back her tears. She gazed out the window, watching as the landscape blurred into a sea of green and brown, her thoughts consumed by the heart-wrenching conversation she had overheard. A storm of emotions raged within her, anger, betrayal, and deep sorrow.
Caroline, choking back her tears, whispered to herself, "How could he change his mind so suddenly? Was it something I did, or something I am? I thought we had a genuine connection."
The journey home seemed to stretch on for an eternity, each bump and jolt of the carriage serving as a reminder of the love she thought she had found and lost. As the sun climbed higher into the sky, it illuminated the opening in the forest giving way to lush meadows, bringing with it the scent of earthy soil, the freshness of the morning air and the sun-warmed plants. Caroline found herself dwelling on if she would ever find happiness or if she was destined to remain alone, her heart forever scarred by the pain of rejection.
As the carriage finally came to a stop outside her home, Caroline took a deep breath, steeling herself for the questions and concerned glances she knew awaited her inside. She stepped out onto the cobblestones, her heart heavy with the weight of the day's revelations.
Upon entering the house, she was immediately greeted by her ever-attentive maid, Mary.
"Miss Bingley, you have returned quite early. Was there an issue
