Chapter Seventeen

“Let me talk to Sarge. You find Amy, eat something, relax, I’ll be back before you know it.” Badden helped Joy out of the jeep. “Then I’ll take you to Doc for a nerve pill or something and hold you until you fall asleep.”

At the start of the day she would have smacked him for suggesting her nerves were fragile. He wasn’t wrong. “Are you going to be in trouble? Because of me? Rations and all.”

“You are far too special. Ledbetter will understand.” Badden leaned down and kissed her on the crown of her head. “You’re safe now.”

“You keep saying that. But today.” She buried her nose in the dip between his collarbones.

“Today you didn’t do what I asked. That’s not going to happen again, is it?” He tilted her chin up. “Is it?”

“No, sir.” She rolled up and pressed her lips to his. “I’m sorry if you get your sack nailed to a tree.”

A glint of something aside from stoic indifference flashed in his eyes. “Tonight you need rest, after that…”

“Badden.” The deep voice boomed over the sounds of voices, shouts, and vehicles crunching grass and gravel.

Badden rolled his neck. “Sarge.”

Joy drew in a breath and held it. The man in charge.

Badden turned, standing between her and Sarge, blocking her view. “Is there a place we can debrief. Alone.”

“Tell me it isn’t true. I didn’t order the limit on survivors without damn good reasons. We are at breaking point now. Do you realize one more puts all of them, us at risk. Damn it. What the hell happened in two days? Extra mouths. Men down. An ambush.” His voice grew lower, yet somehow more menacing.

“There is a damn good reason. We need to talk. Alone.” Badden reached a hand behind to Joy. “Sweetheart, go.”

Joy stepped to his side.

Ledbetter glared at her with sapphire eyes so cold they froze her words before she could say hello. Thick sandy locks framed a face even harder than Badden’s. “This is her?”

She shrunk back as his muscles tensed.

Ledbetter stepped closer to Badden. “I assumed Holly was exaggerating. What are you thinking? It’s a kid.”

“It’s Joy.” She extended a hand, surprised it wasn’t shaking. “I’ll earn my place. Sir.”

“Joy, do as I say.” Badden held Ledbetter in his gaze. “Go with Felix.”

“Felix.” Ledbetter chewed on the letters.

“I’ll explain.” Badden put his hand on her waist and moved her toward the back of the jeep.

She took the cage when he pulled it out, leaving it covered. “I can go.”

“You can’t go. It’ll be fine.” Badden nodded toward the house.

Joy walked away, feeling hateful eyes on her in much the same way she felt arriving under Badden’s glare the first night.

Amy raced over to her. “I heard what happened. I was so afraid for you. Zombies and an ambush. You sure know how to get in proper trouble. Doc was losing his shit when he heard. Ledbetter is on the war path. But what a fine view as he storms around.”

Joy glanced back, Badden and Ledbetter were gone.
