Chapter 29

Arabella

I awake with a jolt, throwing water from the tub all over the floor and Luna, who hisses in protest. My entire body is lit up; every vein in my body looks like it has lightning running through it. I quickly get out of the water, careful not to slip on my floor. Once I'm dressed, and the mess is cleaned up, I examine my body again but it's back to normal. I'm used to my arms lighting up but not my whole body that was new. Walking through my room, I wrap my arms around myself as I stop in front of the window that looks over to Garrett's house. I can see his darkened windows from here and the loneliness starts to seep in. Being back with him in the dream place was bittersweet. I loved being near him again but then I missed him so much more when I had to return. What I wouldn't give to be curled up next him right now, to breathe him in...

My magic flares to life, taking over my body and before I even have time to react, I'm transferendi. One minute, I'm standing in my room looking out the window toward Garrett, and the next I'm standing in the middle of Garrett's room. I look around the dark room, his mini like apartment set up in the attic. Everything is just how he left it; his French book is lying open on the couch, calculus notes lying across the desk. His chest of drawers has a variety of colognes and personal hygiene bottles scattered across it. On his small bookcase that houses his sound system, I see a picture of us dancing at the homecoming dance tacked above it. Moving toward it I can't remember this picture being taken, but I remember that dance like it was yesterday. Other pictures surround it, one of him, Sebastian and Christian at a bonfire after a game. Another one of us sitting in the tree at D'Olive, it was taken at the same time as the one in my room but a different pose. Then there's the one of Riley, Erika, and I before the first football game I attended.

Looking at the shelves of his bookcase, I was shocked to find a few books mixed in with the music. A copy of ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens, ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald, ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Bronte, ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’ by William Shakespeare and ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. The biggest one was the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe. Garrett had never been one for reading so I couldn't exactly figure out why he had these books. Unless...I knew I had quoted 'Great Expectations' before but would he really own it just because I had quoted it. It was also no secret that Poe was my favorite author, but why would he have cared? These books had been here for a while, certain pages had been flagged with colorful pieces of paper sticking out the bindings had seen better days too.
