“Brynn’s whole schtick is entirely self-serving.”

“Maybe, but I don’t think I’ll get a prom date without her help.” “Is it possible to even trust her right now?”

I catch Katie in the parking lot of school the next morning. She has this frantic deer-in-the-headlights look on her face when she spots me, but she doesn’t try to avoid me.

“Hey.” My tone isn’t exactly friendly, but I don’t care. “If Faith wants to write another piece for the Gazette, you should tell her to come to the meetings herself.”

Katie’s lips part in surprise. “Oh. Um, this is awkward, but Faith doesn’t know I went.”

Her eyes stay on mine. I can’t tell if she’s lying or not.

The marine layer lingers above us, creating a dampening chill in the air. I wrap my cardigan tighter around me. “So you came because you wanted to? Despite everything she’s said about me?”

“Just because we run in the same circle doesn’t mean we’re the same person. I told her to lay off with the prom thing. And the Gazette piece? She came up with that on her own.”

She sounds sincere, but I can’t shake my feelings of suspicion. “You’re genuinely interested?”

“Yeah, I meant it when I told you the first time. Faith can be a lot. I know that better than anyone.” She fiddles with the zipper on her book bag. “I just . . . I don’t know. I love my church, right? But I don’t love how judgmental people can be, so I wanted to do some unlearning and, well, learning in general.” She gives me a shy smile. “It was a great meeting, by the way. I didn’t get a chance to tell you. I’ll be back next week.”

I release that protective armor of defense I’ve grown used to wearing. “If you’re being for real. I mean, for real for real, then bring new people with you next time. We’re in danger of being disbanded next semester.”

“Sure,” she agrees, as if it really is no problem. “I can do that. And, hey? I know it used to be different with us, and I’m sorry. For making it seem like I chose Faith over you back in middle school.”

I’m thrown by her honesty. “I mean, isn’t that what happened?”

“Well . . . it’s like, our moms are friends? And they’re such a church family, and, I don’t know, we just became close.” She blinks away the crestfallen expression on her face. “But I want to try and make things right.”

“It was middle school, Katie. I get it. Sometimes people grow apart.” I glance at the time on my phone. “But if you do want to help us, recruiting is a strong start.”

“Okay, yes. Of course,” she says, then, “Hey, um. About the whole Duncan thing? It’s just—if it wasn’t you, then did you ever figure out who it could have been?”

She looks uncomfortable, like bringing it up will somehow offend me.

“I have no idea,” I admit. “I was hoping they’d come forward by now, but another part of me understands why they haven’t.
