The grittiness of the sand was replaced with such a softness that I thought I was either back in my own bed or back in the Descendantâs chambers in the Palacia.
I kept my eyes closed for a while, wrapping myself in the heavy bedding. I rolled over once and then bumped into something hard. I opened my eyes now, seeing Zion curled up next to me, sleeping. When I looked around the room, nothing seemed familiar. Reaching out, I shook Zion awake, my heart beating.
âZion. Zion. Wake up.â
He groaned once, opened his eyes, and then fell back asleep. I pushed him again. He moaned and rubbed at his eyes. âWhat, Cam?â
âWhat happened? Last thing I remember was passing out.â
âYou did,â he said groggily. His hair was tangled and stuck out in impossible directions. I reached out and ran my fingers through his tight coils, trying to get them back in place. âWe tried to wake you up, but you wouldnât. We didnât panic this time, though. We thought Agbala had called you back or something.â
âNo, she didnât,â I said, remembering what Anyanwu had said. âIâm ⦠cloaking us from her. The gods donât seem to like her very much, though.â
âOh, yeah, they still mad because she created the Book without their permission.â
âWell, what happened?â
Someone stood up at the head of the room, and I jumped straight up, trying to grab at my sword, but it wasnât sitting by me anymore.
âItâs me!â Aliyah said, dropping her covers on the cushion she was just lying on.
âWhat happened?â I repeated.
âYou wouldnât wake up, so we just waited,â Aliyah began. âThen a side door magically appeared out of nowhere, leading upward to a tower. So we picked you up, hustled you inside, and this was here.â She gestured to the room around us. âWe decided to just sit here and wait until you came back. Didnât know it would take hours, though.â
âWait. Iâve been gone for hours? It didnât seem that long!â
Aliyah nodded. âWhere did you go?â
A smell brushed past my nose. A nice smell. It made me ravenous, and I realized we hadnât eaten or slept in a long while. âWait. Whatâs that?â
They both shrugged. I went to go investigate. When I stepped out of the bedroom, I found myself in a sitting room, much like the one we used in the Palacia, but different. Windows lined the area on each side. When I looked closer, though, I realized that they werenât windows at all; they were large, carved holes in the walls, opening to the sky around us.
âWhoa,â Zion said, coming to stand by me. âThis wasnât here yesterday. The only thing that was here was the bedroom.â
âAnyanwu,â I whispered, taking in the view. Large firebirds swept past the openings in the walls, their wings covered in flame, sending warmth and air blowing through the room. A golden table was set in the middle of the floor, piled with plates of food. There were bread sandwiches made with boiled goose eggs and
