Chapter Five – Developments

Dusk didn’t have much time to think in depth about the developments in the last couple of hours, However, they did feel a general air of anticipation and the anticipation only continued to mount. As they got off the bus close to where Maya lived, they couldn’t suppress the smile which had forced its way through and when the door opened, Dusk was grinning as if she’d just been told something enormously funny.

“What are you laughing at?” Maya asked. “It’s not me, is it? Because it’s taken me a lot of courage to make this move.”

“Oh no! Of course not. I have just been thinking about something really funny,” Dusk tried to excuse her insanity.

“What is it? Want to share?” Maya provoked.

“Err, no. I don’t think that it would translate that well. I’ve got a weird sense of humor.”

“I’ve noticed. But that’s okay. I like it.” Dusk couldn’t make out if Maya was flirting with her, though secretly they hoped that she was.

“Are you going to ask me in? Or must I stay here on the naughty step?”

“I should make you stay on the naughty step, but I’m too polite for that,” and Maya stood to one side and tilted her head in towards the house. Dusk went in. It was a dark hallway and looked as if it hadn’t been decorated since the seventies. There was carpet on the floor, but it had seen better days and Dusk didn’t know if it was discolored with age or if that was in fact its real color. Preferably it should have been thrown out. Dusk always tried their best not to be judgmental, but evidence of uncleanliness permeated into their skin, and they already felt itchy.

“Yeah, it’s a palace, isn’t it?” Maya said unapologetically. Dusk didn’t know what to say. They weren’t about to disagree because it wouldn’t have been credible, and they didn’t want to be patronizing.

“Come on in. Can I get you something? Juice, water, milk?”

“Umm, no. No thanks, I’m good.” Dusk internally rebuked themselves for thinking that it might not be safe to imbibe anything here.

“Where are your parents?” Dusk asked, not just to make conversation but to find out whether they would be interrupted.

“At the bar. I don’t think that they’ll be back before eleven, at least. If that’s why you’re asking.”

Dusk felt as if Maya could see directly into her brain. “Just curious is all,” Dusk improvised. “What did you want to talk to me about?”

“Shall we go into the living room? It’s fractionally nicer in there and there’s somewhere to sit.” She led the way into the room on their left and Dusk did their best not to stare too much. There was nothing to compliment in here either, so she remained quiet.

“Please, take a seat.” Maya to sit on the chair opposite the sofa where Dusk was standing and they simply sat on that, facing her. “Firstly, I wanted to say sorry.”

“You already did that.”

“I know. But I wanted to say it face-to-face so that you could see that I meant it and that it was sincere.
