CHAPTER 33

The next evening Bertie waited anxiously in his sitting room, looking out the window. Again, he had a feast laid out on the table and champagne waiting for Nellie’s arrival. He saw the carriage pull up outside and quickly went to wait by the fireplace. A few moments later the door opened and Nellie walked in. She looked at him and then went rushing into his arms and kissed him passionately.

“I’ve been counting the minutes until I saw you again,” he whispered into her ear.

“And I you,” she whispered back.

He reached to the mantelpiece and took down a box which he held out to Nellie.

“What’s this?” she asked.

“Open it and see,” he urged excitedly.

She opened the box and saw a diamond necklace inside.

“Oh, Bertie, why?” she asked, looking up at him.

“Because I wanted you to have something special. I went out to a jeweller’s today and, when I saw this, I just had to get it for you.”

“I wish you hadn’t,” she said, closing the box and handing it back to him.

“But why ever not?” he asked, surprised. He had never known a woman who did not enjoy being given diamonds before.

“I just wish you hadn’t,” she said as tears began to fall down her face.

“Nellie!” he said, shocked at her tears. “Have I done something wrong?”

How could she ever explain to him? The life she led and what she had received in return. And for him to give her diamonds made her feel that this time with him was just like the times with the others. Her time and favours in return for financial rewards. It was reducing something that she was treating as special and different to a financial transaction.

“Oh Nellie! Please tell me what I have done wrong?” he begged.

“Nothing!” she said. “I just – don’t want anything from you, Bertie.”

“But it’s just a necklace!” he said.

“You had no right to buy it for me!” Her sad tears gave way and now she became angry and slammed the box back on the mantelpiece and walked away from him.

“I think I’d better go,” she said, looking out the window to see if the carriage was still waiting there. Unfortunately, it had already gone.

“Go! But why? I couldn’t wait to see you again,” he said.

“Well, you’ve ruined it all now by getting me diamonds. I thought you respected me. I thought we understood each other,” she said, still angry.

“I do! We do!” he said. “I didn’t mean to offend you. I just thought it would be a nice thing to do for you. I want to please you, Nellie, to make you happy.”

“Well, you don’t please me! You don’t please me at all by buying me diamonds when you hardly even know me!” All Sadie’s words of warning came back to her. Her mind was in turmoil. The real reason she was there with him. How she had allowed herself to get carried away. But Bertie knew nothing of that. She had thought he had just wanted to be with her because he liked her.
