Chapter 15
âWelcome back, Captain J,â chimed Billy Wong, âYou long time gone. Yes, long time. Many ladies be velly glad you home. They give me special letters, smell velly sweet.â He ran giggling a few steps ahead with his employerâs valise.
Jonathan went straight to his desk and began going over the J & Q accounts posted in his absence. When he finished, he sorted through the mail, wrote several bank drafts, and walked to the post office to mail them. He could have sent one of the clerks, but he wanted to walk through the town himself. It always looked smaller when he returned from a long trip. Perhaps he was getting island fever and beginning to tire of New Providence.
It was late afternoon when he returned to the J & Q building and climbed the stairs to the living quarters. He expected to find the usual glass of bourbon waiting on the table beside his favorite chair. Instead he found two glasses and a ladyâs hat.
âHello, Captain,â she said in a husky voice from the doorway of his bedroom. Her red hair fell about her bare shoulders accentuating a very attractive bosom. âYou are making a habit of such long trips lately. You must be tired.â She was barefoot wearing only a single petticoat. âHow would you like someone to rub your back?â
âJessica, you are going to get us both shot. Where is your husband, and who saw you come up here?â
âMy, what a worrywart. I came through the back gate and up the rear stairs like I always do, J. Hillary. And you need not worry about my straight-laced husband. Thatâs what you think of him isnât it, that he is the perfect straight-laced citizen?â
âI donât think about him at all, but I am concerned about your reputation. Itâs a small island.â
âItâs a boring island. So boring even my adoring husband has been affected. What would you say if I told you he had an island girl, a brown-skinned island girl that he visits quite often?â
âIâd say that itâs none of my business.â
She walked across the room, stepped behind him and kissed the back of his neck and reached both hands around to unbutton his shirt. He moved her hands and turned to face her.
âYouâre a damn attractive lady, Jess, but you were right, I am tired.â He kissed her on the forehead, stepped to the small table, and picked up both drinks. âHere you are,â he said handing one to her. âI toast the prettiest redhead in all the Caribbean.â
She took a sip, put the glass back on the table, and kissed him hard on the mouth. He reciprocated lamely. She tried again and this time she ran her hand down to feel his response. There wasnât any.
âWho is she?â Jessica asked as she sat down in his chair, and picked up her drink.
âWho is who?â he answered.
âCome now, Jonathan. Iâve known you too long for you to deceive me. Before you left, I could merely look at you across the room and see your flame come alive.
