Hours before the scheduled ten oâclock meeting, the President and his staff were at work sorting through all that had happened across the country throughout the night. It seemed that the public had not come to grips with the consequences of the attack on the Rapid Defense Center the day before, at least not initially, especially on the East Coast. The tragic event was something that happened on the other side of the country, so how could it possibly affect them?
And so, on Tuesday morning, Americans got in their cars, boarded trains or entered subway stations, beginning this day like all the rest. That situation was about to change very quickly.
President Ortega and his staff were right in their assessment; Abdul-Shahid Almasi had enlisted the assistance of several other terrorist organizations and placed them on standby, waiting for the time when the RDC was taken out before acting. Now, forty-two simultaneous operations had been initiated across America.
For months beforehand, small groups of operatives had been brought into the country to prepare for the attacks. Many came with nothing more than suitcases of clothing, as they were able to acquire just about everything they needed for their missions locally, either from sympathetic supporters or from the local Home Depot or hobby shop. They set up relay stations for the more long-distant guided events, while other RPAâs would be piloted from on-site for attacks on strategic targets, with their operators escaping in the ensuing confusion. Tractor-trailer rigs were great for this, with stations and wireless setups in the trailers for the pilots. They could be stationed anywhere within a ten-mile radius of the target; even then, periodic booster stations could be placed in cars closer to the action while the operators were many miles away.
It was also expected that domestic militant groups would seize upon the opportunity and fly crude, bomb-laden drones into abortion clinics, mosques, churches and synagogues, only adding to the impact of the RDC raid. In rare occasions, even personal grudges would be settled between individuals and disgruntled neighbors, expecting that these assassinations would be blamed on terrorists or others of their ilk.
Although it was warned that Americaâs initial response would be weak; eventually, the full might of the nation would be brought to bear against those responsible. Even with the RDC out of the mix, the United States still had plenty of weapons at her disposal, if not to prevent the attacks, then to surely track down those who carried them out. The NSA, the CIA, and the FBI, along with a dozen other heavily-financed acronyms, meant that the window of opportunity for striking at the heart of the nation would be short-lived. As a result, the surge of terrorist bombings, shootingsâand just general mayhemâwould be compressed into just a few tragic days in American history.
Once the attacks got underway, they produced a variety of mind-boggling consequences.
The New Stock Exchange closed over fifteen hundred points down in a shortened two-hour trading sessionâthe largest single-day drop in history. Meanwhile,
