LOW-COST OPTIONS FOR HOME USE

Tree pruners and arborists cut down trees constantly, and they need to dispose of that wood. Sometimes, they have an arrangement with a wood lot that will trim it to size and sell it back to the consumer. One of your best choices for getting free or low-cost firewood is to locate the arborists in your area and arrange to pick up some of their wood or have it delivered. You may have to rush to a tree-pruning site on short notice in order to take advantage of their available wood.

In addition to contacting local arborists, our public lands, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the US Forest Service, provide opportunities for you to collect wood for home or personal use. For small amounts, you might not even need a permit on BLM land. On most Forest Service lands, firewood permits cost around $20 and allow you to collect up to four hundred cubic feet (the equivalent of nearly four full-size truck beds). Check your local regulations and visit BLM or Forest Service offices to get a permit, a map of designated areas where cutting trees is allowed, and any specific restrictions or requirements.
