Chapter Twenty-Eight

Amy Rogers’ attempt to end her own life generated a tidal wave of legal interpretations in all the news channels. Commentators piled column upon column of legal argument on what some termed ‘the decidedly immoral possibility’ that a rape case might be closed and that a rapist would remain on the loose because the complainant was no longer able to testify. And because of a suicide attempt, no less, that must have been committed because of her emotional and mental disorientation. Criminal law professors and renowned legal practitioners were interviewed ad nauseum in every possible media channel. And the only certain fact that emerged from it all was that opinions were divided.

There were those who claimed that continuing the trial was essential. Not to do so, they said, might well result in criminals attempting to take their victims out in future cases. Something the legal system simply could not countenance. Other commentators claimed the corner stone of criminal law could not be compromised. That every man is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and a person’s right to defend himself cannot be denied under any circumstances. Meanwhile, the social networks reflected a one-sided and almost unvaryingly absolute reply to that very question. The vast majority were for the continuation of Roman Anderson’s trial. Logic played little part in the forming of this opinion. When the news of Amy’s attempted suicide broke, Professor Roman Anderson was almost instantly portrayed as her murderer as well as rapist. Public opinion held that pushing Amy to try to kill herself was equivalent to murdering her. More than one voice called for him to be castrated and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Joey had just emerged from the shower, wearing nothing but his pants, his hair still dripping onto his long, slender body. He saw Gal and immediately turned back into the bathroom. When he returned a short while later, he had pulled on a shirt.

“What, you’re shy of me now?” Gal teased him.

“Come on,” Harry said, hiding his amusement. “Gal has a surprise for us.”

Joey sat down.

“Tell us what you’ve found,” Harry said.

“I found Amy in her class books. I located a few of her classmates and some of her best friends. More importantly, one of them insisted on giving me some letters Amy had written to her. Then I was able to get some more letters from other friends she had written to as well.”

“And?”

“You tell me,” said Gal, all excited. She tossed a bundle of papers over to him, all written in a dense, round hand. Harry opened the bundle, took out the first letter and started reading.

A girl, a teenager, writing letters to her girlfriends on illustrated stationary. They
